Harley Detail Question on Spoke rims?

I did this Harley on Saturday..it wasn't all that bad just time consuming about 6 hours start to finish.

Question the front spoke rim was covered with this bakes on crud...turns out that it's a stainless steel spoke and they gather over time some organic buildup..hard to describe it but the only way I've been able to get it off is with steel wool, extremely time consuming.

That got me thinking about using a acid based cleaner to see if that would lift the crud..

Any other thoughts on this?

I take it iron-x type products didn't help. maybe give spray brake/parts cleaner a try.
