So there have been threads on various forums showing these mods, and I figured I would do a how-to video for them. The mods are power button relocation so they are on top instead of the left side, and regreasing the gear head to make the machine quieter and vibrate less. Here are the links!

updated method of opening gear head:

added a third video showing how to replace the power cord with a longer one. all three mods can be done in about 15 minutes each. thanks for checking it out!

just added an updated way of opening the gear head. it should be done uploading shortly, link in original post! Eliminates need of using vice grip on screws.

I have one as a backup and just finished the three upgrades today. definitely a lot smoother and quieter now. I used a 25ft. cord. thanks.

You seem pretty experienced with these. Ive luckily found a few used for very cheap in craigs. I noticed one came with drilled holes in the back of the weight. The other one does not. Have you heard of or seen this mod? The one with the drilled holes in the weight seems to run a bit smoother and noticeably softer than the other. Ive only used the this one for applying wax so far. Anyone else please chime in if you`re familiar with this.

Don`t know about drilling the counterweight but the Porter Cable 5" backing plate counter weight fits the HF just fine.

Glad to see some HF D/A love...while not as good as the Rupes, great results can still be achieved. Here is a 50/50 on the hood of my Mercedes C63....

Very nice! I know this thing has potential I havent used it for correction yet, cant wait to work on my brothers cars with horrible water spots everywhere.

Back to the weight, I suppose the guy I bought it from did this mod to it. Im not really sure if there is an advantage yet. The grease was an orange color too seems he replaced it with a better quality one. I remember seeing a guy on youtube who makes a custom weight rep for DA polishers has anyone heard of him? I wonder if I have one of those, seems like whoever drilled those holes knew exactly what they were doing.

So I just did some research on the counter weight. Its designed for a 6 inch BP (duh), when you place a 5 in BP the weight maybe "too much" causing some extra vibration problems etc for some. I did notice a difference and cant really say if it`s significant enough until I use it for its intended purpose.
There is a website that sells a designated 5 in BP weight for those who want to replace the original weight that comes with the 6 in BP. Not sure if it can be posted here for those interested.

Steelhoilder, links to other retail sites are not permitted. As indicated in my previous post the Porter Cable 5 inch counterweight works fine. I have one with this mod. It`s not uncommon to see people make this modification when using a 5 inch backing plate. Some say it helps, others say not so much. I believe it can be purchased at AutoGeek or Autopia Car-Care, I`d always recommend keeping the purchase here in the family. Ask Ray.
