So far, I love my new position. I spent the first two days getting oriented with procedures and other things. Tuesday, I came in with guns blazing.
The first thing I did was based on something I saw yesterday that was personally disturbing to me. I saw that some calls were sitting for an extremely long time in the queue (read: SEVERAL months) and decided to follow up with the people so that we could get the ball rolling on resolutions.
I also worked on some tickets that were pretty minor (but sitting in the queue unnecessarily) and knocked them out in short order.
I just had a meeting with my manager Friday and she placed me in charge of deploying the new desktops and laptops for the entire organization. In the next three weeks, I am going to get the following to play with:
Dell OptiPlex GX280 Small Form Factor Desktop
Dell Precision 470 Workstation
Dell Latitude D610
Part of my function is to come up with a stable image for these machines. In addition, she mentioned that she wants to roll out Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard to everyone in the organization. However, I am running into an issue with Acrobat and XP SP2 that I am discovering is quite widespread. It seems that when you install Acrobat after running certain MS Updates (I need to find out which one is the culprit), you get a message that you cannot install the PDF printer. I checked out Adobe's site for info on this and none of their suggested solutions work.
But before I can do that, I have to check every machine in the facility to see if they have the SMS client installed. If not, I am going to talk with the network admin to see if he'll push it out for me in order to save time. In addition, I have to do some more reading on SMS before she sends me to training on 6/14.
