Guide to Machine polishing

I have noticed a couple areas on my wheels where breakdust seems to be permanently bonded to. I have made severl attempts to clean the wheels with variouse wheel cleaners, but it does no good. Today I decided to use Meguiars all-metal-polish, which is a mild abrasive. Afterwards, there was no difference, the dust was still there. Is there nything else I can do?
 
use wonderwheels - voted best alloy cleaner by 5 magzines including auto express, top gear and auto trader.



I have only started using it on the Arnage which has brake dust on the front two allots under the spokes - really tough dirty brake dust from motorway mileage- the wonder wheel solution once applied with the applicator brush then foams up dissolving all that dirt no matter how solid it is.



It costs £6.99 for a bottle of 500ml - available at most motor accessorie stores.

(Other products do have a similar affect - its a case of testing them - some people find they work others dont)

You could always try a stronger abrasive, like 3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound. Sometimes I spray some WD40 on the spot and let it sit for a little while and then wipe it off or hit it with a little abrasive and that sometimes does the trick. :up
 
Try the mothers wheel polish it may remove them. There is a review in the review section. They have it for clear coat wheels and I think polished.
 
The adhesive remover stuff the car tire balancers use to get the glud off of the old wheel weights? I cant remember what it is exactly, but I know its not actually adhesive remover, but something similar. Might be worth a trip to your local tire installer.

Hello M35power! You have an M3 or M5? Great car!



Before using an abrasive polish, I would try a few different chemicals like Brake Parts Cleaner or a little bit of paint thinner.



If that doesn't work, and you have some clay left that is no longer effective/safe for paint... try that on the wheel along with a good lubricant. You’ll need to try it a few times to completely remove all the brake dust.



If either the chemical or clay won’t work, then you’ll need to use an abrasive. Start with the mildest abrasive and gradually step up to harsher compounds. You can try 3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound as SL suggested.

"BW" I have 2000 M5, and had a 98 M3 but recently sold it.

But in a few more weeks I should have a pristine Individual 95 M3 with only 978miles.



I am having trouble on the M5's wheels, but I will go ahead and try using some wd-40, adhesive remover, etc, before I go to a more abrasive compound.



I also was thinking about using those griot's wheel polishing "drill-bits".
 
Once you find something that will clean the imbedded brake dust, change your brake pads to some that will shed less dust, like EBC's.



Mothers wheel cleaner is pretty good, and shouldn't damage the wheel's clear coat. If you use clay to remove the brake dust, trash the clay bar when done-you don't want a clay bar with brake dust imbedded in it touching your paint.
 
I get this problem with alot of my wholesale cars, 10 plus years old, I will use laquer thinner on a terry cloth rag, or goo gone, prep sol, sometimes I end up spraying some aluminum paint in the grooves, WHOLESALE cars only, not on the nice stuff!

The M5 wheels are spray painted with a clear coat on top. I will stay away from any kind of metal polish. Let me know if you find an effective solution. I have the same problem with my wheels. Clay will take the brake dusts out but it requires many passes.

I forgot have u used a wire alloy brush?? They are brilliant - gets into all areas of the wheel no matter what size and its scrubs all that bonded dirt away in secs. - Worth a try!!
 
Hi i wanted to start using a machine for polishing. I have a fair idea, Wanted a step by step guide by the pro's on how to use a machine the safest and most efficient way.

This site is full of tips, and you can also go to PAC by clicking the "Show PAC Site" to get lot's of articles.

I'm not sure if there's a reference guide out there, too many new products, new tips, etc.

If you have specific questions, search for them, and if you don't find anything people on here are happy to give input!
