Griots Paint Prep Equivalent

I have been told that it is best to remove the old wax/sealent before using a SMR to takle swirls. Instead of using a Paint Cleaner with my PC, I want something like Griots Paint Prep that i can just easily spray on and wipe off to remove the old stuff in minutes. At $15 dollars a bottle for the Griots Paint Prep, I am looking for something alittle more cost effective, so my question is what are my options?

I have read that I can make up a spray bottle of Isoproyl Alcohol/Water and that will remove wax. What dilution ratio(Product:Water) do I use to remove both wax and sealent by simply just spraying this on and wiping it offthe paint? Also is this a safe product to use on all paints on the entire vehicle like this?

On the Meguiars site it says that APC+ can be used to remove old wax at a dilution ration of 64:1. Does anyone use this in a spray bottle to remove the old wax and sealent from thier paint and how did it work? Would this be a better choice then Alcohol and be more like the Griots?

Are these two my 2 best options or are there other products or choices out there that I can safely put in a spray bottle to remove old wax and sealent to an entire car? Thanks for all the help

You dont have to take the old wax off. The SMR will take off whatever you have anyway....why bother adding another step?? Save yourself time and hassles, just clean the car with a good wash then get stuck into the SMR with the PC.

I have been told and also have read that if you remove the old wax/sealent first, that whatever SMR you use will perform its job of removing swirls better, plus the pad won't get caked up with old wax/sealent. Also I could use this spray bottle both for the entire vehicle before a detail or just for spot cleaning or filler removal.

A 50:50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water is what I use in a spray bottle. Typically, I first use a paint cleaner (like Medallion or Menzerna FP), then do an iso:water spray wipe...and go from there.

Thanks for the reply. Will the 50:50 mixture of Alcohol remove both wax and sealant. And is it safe to use as a wax remover on all paints. The reason I want an equivalent to Griots Paint Prep is because I think it would be easiler and quicker to just wipe it on the paint and wipe it off then to use a paint cleaner with my PC. So that is why I am looking for a product that i can use in a spray bottle that will be effective on the removal of both wax and sealant and also be safe to use on all paints which can be applied to the whole vehicle. Thanks again

I bit the bullet on this one, and just bought it mid last week, I am waiting for it now. Did you try it yet, I am curious how well it works. You can try Granitize, code R-4. I posted a message about it and people say that was cheaper. I didn't do research into it because I already posted my order.

No I have not used it. By the description in Griots catalog, it is exactly what i am looking for, but at $16 a bottle, I am trying to find a product that will do the same thing but for a better price. APC+ looks promising but I am waiting to hear if others have used it in a spray bottle for wax/sealant removal and if it is safe on all paints.-

I did a quick search and that granite stuff is like 27 bucks per gallon. Also they told me u can find it stores.

I probably post up how well the griots one works when i get it, if i can tell if works or not.

Do you clay bar? I think the mothers clay bar says it can remove a large chunk of the wax.

I cannot guarantee that the 50:50 IPA mix will remove all wax/sealant in one pass...may take 2-3 passes, but it will not harm the paint. Still why not use a paint cleaner first by hand if you prefer that method over a PC. Granted, it is alittle more work, but the results will be better IMHO......take pride in the process.

Does the Griot product guarantee 100% wax/sealant removal in one pass?
