Griots Garage - Strange smell then it died

I bought a Griots Garage 6" almost exactly a year ago. I use it probably 3 to 4 times a week and it has run like a champ...until today. I was trying out HD Cut (great product BTW) on a Audi TT. About half way through the job I smelled a strange smell...not melting, not really burning, just a strange smell. A couple panels later the machine sputtered and died. Brushes? Motor? I've never had a polisher die before except for a short in a cord so not sure whats up.

If its a motor, anyone know what the GG warranty is?

That's why I like the Harbor Frieght DA, just walk into the store and leave with a new one. No mailing, no phone calls, just good customer service, right now!

Hopefully not. The extra brushes come with the machine.

Mine also came with the brushes but they were not listed in the manual so I called customer service and they told me to NOT use them--throw them away. Recently I called to see if it was OK to replace the cord with something more flexible and I was told it would impact the warranty.

How can they void the warranty when it comes with extra brushes?

They said that the brushes were placed in the box by mistake for a period of time.

I just received a new GG6 that went back to Griot for repair. They sent back a brand new machine and guess what...it had spare brushes in the box.

I changed the brushes today and it fired. I didnt use it though...temporary fix maybe.

Had you sent it back to Griots I'll bet you would have gotten a brand new V3 machine.

No, you still get a v2. Ive sent 4 back since the v3 was out and have been getting v2's still.

every time I have sent the GG back, I get a brand new machine back...with extra brushes.

I finally got someone at GG to send me 5 extra sets of brushes. anytime the machine dies, replace the brushes and its good to go!!! only had to replace 2 times now, so I have a couple extra sets for future without having to send them in. Beats a two week turn around time for them to get me a brand new machine with handle, machine, and backing plate! Plus, it takes 3 min to change them out!
