What do you guys like in here? TomToms? Garmins?



The TomTom ONE XL S is a really good device, perfect for text to speech and basic nav.



Post what you own and whether you like it or not....

I have a garmin c520 a friend had the top of the line tom tom for a while and it kept having problems he switched the the garmin nuvi and has had only one problem and upgraded to the bigger one with the best buy protection plan.
 
it depends. If you are just getting the same one it is pretty good and then you can buy another one to cover the new gps. Now if you are not happy and want a different model completely they get a little crabby but you just press the issue and they should cave.(something about having it fail for the same problem 4 times) They didnt want to give my friend money back, he really was going to trade up for the nuvi, so i was popping in and told the guy look we are going to give you more money just do it.
 
The guys seem to feel the map system (vendor) is better on the Garmin units - - they use Navteq.



I've got a Magellan that's about 4 yrs old. Works great, but the interface is a bit too much effort. It's also slow when it comes to drawing screens and calculating. However, it has a very good PC based interface which the Garmin doesn't (available for $15).



I bought a nuvi360 about 2 months ago. I can't put the thing down. It's amazing and the user-interface is just excellent.



No personal experience with TomTom.



The prices on these things have just plummeted. When my nuvi was introduced a couple of years ago it was $900+. I paid $250 when I bought it 8 wks ago (via COSTCO). It's amazing what the $250 gets you. This thing is the entire AAA business model in one tiny package :) The built-in database is vast, 6+ million points!
 
I have fooled with the Garmin products and purchased a 760 for my mother. She gives it a 10/10 I use the one in our Lexus. I tend to favor the Lexus version, probably because I have used it alot. 8.5/10



I have tried TomTom top of the line. Complete POS. Not worth a penny. Utter crap. Difficult to use, innacurate, gave horrible directions, and lost signal regularly. 0/10



Magellins are nice, and definately in the Garmin world as far as overall quality. I just didn't like the interface as much.
 
I have a (free) Garmin Nuvi and its really cool, for the money, none of these lil gizmos can be beat, if you buy any one of them they all work pretty good, IMHO.
 
i forgot to add tom tom uses telenav(i think that is it) which is largely european based and they might have changed it but their points of intrest were like 4 years old on a brand new unit.
 
TomTom One, works almost flawlessly for me. It guided me from Memphis to Orlando and back with no errors and I never once looked at a paper map. Even found a place to eat while there!



I've logged a lot of miles while under the TT, and it has proved its worth to me!



I'm looking to add a Garmin 260 at some point, no hurry though, and waiting for the price to drop under $200.

I use the TomTom One and so far it has worked very well. It even knows the directions to the little village we visit for holidays which essentially is just 4 houses near a beach in Southern (the Republic of) Ireland
 
Garmin's are the benchmark for GPS. GPS's are getting cheaper everyday so no need to hold off or buy immediately. I'd go with a 250 + models since they are so stable. gpslodge.com & gpsinformation.net are good.
 
Garmin Nuvi 660.

Great maps, amazing features. Multiple voices. The standard voice was a North American female voice. I soon realized it sounded amazingly like my wife and the two voices battling for 'Turn right on Glanford Ave' or 'Turn left on Douglas St.' was just too much. I switched to a male voice and left the wife at home.

Naming the streets for turns is a great feature.

The FM feature lets the car radio pick up the directions and tunes and works well.

The bluetooth feature links perfectly with my Razr phone for hands free phone stuff.

The MP3 player uses the SD slot for a ton of extra tunes.

The picture gallery lets you take photos of your kids, grandkids, dogs, cars along with you.

The 660 just works extremely well.

Garmin support is wonderful.



Within 2 weeks of getting my Nuvi 660, I accidently left it down stairs on the side of a chair while I put on my shoes. An hour later, I realized I didn't have it with me. Unfortunately, 59 minutes before I realized I didn't have it, my female Renaissance Bulldog, in a motherly way, found it. Their jaw muscles generate more pounds per square inch than a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The leather case and unit were totally chewed to death.



The support gal giggled uncontrollably when I explained my predicament (and my stupidity) and offered a refurbished unit for a surprisingly small amount.

The replacement is back and working like a champ. Momma and pups are doing well.

I'd certainly recommend a Garmin unit for both the quality of the product and the quality of the service.

(The eyes aren't open yet but we've decided on a perfect name for a little brown and white English beauty (as much as a bulldog can be a beauty) - Caramella Parker Bowles.)

I used a GO 910 recently, and was somewhat let down.



The best TomTom I've used is still the ONE 3rd edition, none of the additional features appeal to me, personally.
 
I just got a Nuvi 260w incredible! I just wish it had an external volume and mute control it would make taking calls easier.
 
Do you guys actually get much use out of the phone and media features on your GPS?



Like I know the Go 720 has all the bells and whistles you need, but I don't know how often I'd use those features. Its impressive to show others, but what about functionality?
 
I get a huge use out of the extra stuff. In my own area I know the roads well and don't need the route planning but the tunes and phone through the radio are handy.

When I'm driving a charter bus in undiscovered country, like a recent trip to Moscow, Id., the phone gets turned off but headphones plugged into an audio out jack make navigation a breeze.
