Got my Rotary!

I got my Makita in the mail yesterday along with some other products I ordered. Bought some High Temp products, HC, EC, and the Smooth Polish, and all 3 Optimum polishes/compounds. Hyper Compound, Compound, and Polish. I can't wait to start practicing. Got an old hood I plan on trying it out on. Got the 6" flex backing plate, yellow, orange, and white pad.

Do you guys basically just use the rotary on severe paint then switch to pc or do you use it even when it isn't severe? Is it o.k. to use IP and FPII and products like that with the rotary? It has to make everything alot quicker a? Can't wait to find some BAD paint lol. How severe of a scratch can you take out with a rotary?

If you finish with something like fp or op on a pad that has no cut (LC blue or black, megs white) then you can finish with a rotary and save loads of time.

How fast do you move the rotary around? I'm assuming the polish/compound breaks down and works alot more rapidly? Where can I find a video or something on the internet for some technique hints. Do you do the same overlapping technique as used with PC?

Grats, man!

I think the advice I heard about using a rotary is pretty good: keep the speed below 1k rpm, and as long as you keep the thing moving, you'll be ok. From there, it's just a matter of practice.

As far as how deep a scratch you can remove safely, that's not a really easy question to answer. Most people say that if you can feel it with a fingernail, it's too deep. Can't argue there, but if your clear coat (or paint if it's SS) is thin, you could do some damage trying to remove a scratch that you CAN'T feel with your fingernail.

What about on contours and tilting the rotary on an angle? Is that only after you have a good bit of practice? Anything to watch out for? Do you guys tape off all the edges when using rotary? Sorry for all the questions but I have learned alot here and now I want to learn more about the rotary. Thx.

I have the large LC CCS pads from CMA. haven't been very happy with them. I'm going to order the 6" Edge Wool series from AG tomorrow. I'm not much of a large pad fan.
