Got my 7424 today. Ready to Go, I THINK?

Porter Cable 7424 (includes owner's manual, side handle, flat wrench, 6" non velcro backplate)

5" flexible backing plates

2 Unused Lake Country 6.5" white polishing pads

1 Unused Lake Country Orange Light cut pad

1 Used Lake Country Orange Light cut pad

16 oz. 3M Imperial Microfinishing Compound(heavy/med cut)

8-9 oz. Valugard Cerious Compound/Polish(med cut)

12 oz. Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Mark Remover(med-light cut)

16 oz. 3M Imperial Microfinishing Glaze(light cut/polish)

12 oz. 3M Liquid Showcar wax





These are the things I recieved from gbackus.



I will be trying this out on my Grand Prix, just the hood, unless either I screw it up, or find out it is easier than I thought.



I am thinking of just using the Orange with the PASMR and work that in. Then take the white pad with the 3M IMG and work that in and wax by hand, since I don't have a pad yet for the PC. Unless you think applying the wax with the white pad is adviseable?



Any other hints? I am out to wash the car.
 
I just finished half the roof and the hood. I think I did some good, but think there could be more do be done, maybe with a rotary, but for now, it is definately better.

Looking good! What process did you use? You might want to take another pass. There are still a few swirls but it does look a ton better. You will get better the more you do it. Good job!
 
I used these in this order.

Valugard Cerious Compound - Orange LCC Pad

Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Mark Remover - Orange LCC Pad

3M Imperial Microfinishing Glaze - White LCC Pad

Car Brite Crystal Shine - White LCC Pad



no wax yet, don't have the black pad.
 
If you still have swirls you are wanting to get out, keep making passes with your compound and orange pad until they are gone. Also, make sure you use *very* slow passes, only polishing small areas at a time.
 
So how should I clean the pads, and store them? I still need to put a wax on, might do that next, but by hand.

Yeah, when you try to use the PC for paint correction you have to use patience. Crank up the speed, use a little pressure, and slowly let the machine and polish do their job. You *will* be able to correct almost anything, but it will just take some time. This is the difference between the PC, the UDM, and the rotary......time.
 
I just spray my pads with some APC diluted with water, let that set, and toss em in a bucket of water. Come back to it and massage the pads till the product comes out. Or just throw them in the washer.
 
Here are the final results. I will do this once more before winter hits, I will take my time and work in smaller area's.



 
Looking at pads, I see that there is still quite a selection for bonnets. What would be the safest to get bonnet wise? Is there a difference between the Cobra Indigo vs the Cobra Deluxe? Same Price, one is on sale.
 
From experience with those products, I would recomend the following.



For REALLY heavy cutting you might want to get a more aggresive pad, and use the 3M compound, followed by EITHER the cerious or Pinnacle with an orange pad, and finish with the white pad and 3m glaze.



For medium defects I would recomend EITHER the cerious with orange, or the pinnacle with orange, followed by the 3M glaze with a white pad.



For light defects, use the 3m glaze(it's more of a finishing polish, it will not hide imperfections like 3m imperial hand glaze would) with either the orange or white pad, depending on how aggressive or gentle you want to be, as well as how hard or soft the paint is.



You can wax either with the white pad, or get a softer pad(lake country black for instance), or by hand with a foam or microfiber applicator.



Remember to work the product in well(especially the compounds), and use slow overlapping motions. Just keep practicing, your results will get better over time.



BTW, glad everything made it there OK.
 
Worked on it some more, I think I need a rotary to fix some of this, or lot more exp. A buddy is going to come over this weekend and help, guide and bring in his rotary.



I worked in smaller areas, slowed down the movement of the DA, and got some better improvements. The surface of this paint was a lot worse than I thought.



Here are some pics of what I did tonight. I just worked the top part of the passenger side. Front 1/4 panel door and back 1/4 panel.

I havent had my velcro come off. I've done it at least 3-5 times without any harmful results. But sometimes it just happens.



And lastly, pads with pads, towels with towels.
