Got an idea

My cars clearcoat has been eaten away pretty badly on my 03 golf gti. I was wondering if i can somehow touch it up with like clearcoat from factory? Anyone ever thought of doing this? I have good sized etching that can be felt when rubbed with finger.

Wow, your clear is already that far gone and it's only an 03'?? First, I suggest posting picture of what you are talking about so you can get a more accurate answer from the members, but without seeing what we're dealing with, I'd say to start off with a wash, clay, and good machine polish before jumping to any conclusions.

I used to have a 97' Explorer with pretty sever cc failure and, after polishing, pretty much 90% of it became unnoticeable. You can see my before and after pics in My Gallery (look in my sig.).

POlish has been done, clay has been done. The car is from georgia so i am assuming it sat outside for a LONG time. I was thinking of adding clearcoat to a small area and then polishing off the excess.

I've painted my truck twice. You can reclear panels or the entire car. I first wet sanded my factory clear with 1000grit, did ghost flames then clear. The following year, again...except HOK candy violet/cobalt flames. I'm no where near a pro but use a high quality clear. I used HOK clear and found out later is has low solids so I needed more coats to achieve depth. I'm not sure who makes a high solid clear. I'm thinking Dupont or PPG. You could sand the car yourself, then take it somewhere and they can clear it, then color sand it. It will look like glass.

If you still have some factory clear left, it might just need color sanding. Use 2000grit to sand out the bad area. Then it's polished out to look like glass. For that you need an porter cable or polisher. I have a polisher and use a wool pad and products from 3M to cut and polish.

Sorry for the long winded reply.

have you tried a rotary yet? if not try some 1500/2000 grit wet sanding if you cant get a hold of one. it doesnt look like you need new clear.

i agree..that looks like etching from water..i would try a mild to medium cut polish with a polishing pad using a rotary or pc on a test area on the hood

A polish has been done with Poorboys 2.5 and yelow cutting pad via PC. I dont know how thick my clearcoat is but i can FEEL the etch if i use a little pressure and go across the etching.

Thanks for the article. I am just scared that if a rotary is put to it then the clear will be too thin. I just got this car like 4 months ago and did a 2.5 run at it. I did it once and twice in some areas.

the 2.5 and pc wouldnt of removed much clear..i do agree about your concern regarding the remaing clear..but touching it up with clear is incredibly difficult :bawling:

Every vehicle is warranteed bumper to bumper when it is new. That includes paint, if it actually fails. I believe a 2003 has a 3yr/36k bumper to bumper. Depending when you bought this car, you may be in luck. This is only valid if there has been no other paint work done to the body part in question. Your incident is clearly enviornmental, not paint failure.

Not really sure of the duration, but I believe Porsche has a 10 year warranty against rust through as does Toyota and many other manufacturers. Check the website or call the dealer for the details.

I will also agree that it will be extremely difficult. I am gonna give Menzerna IP and Menzerna FPII a go. I will be putting on either Zaino or FMJ, not sure yet. I was thinking of putting FMJ firts and seeing how i like it and if i am not sure i will put on Zaino. I dont want to put zaino on first cause i will be polishing each panel on my spare time :P. How many passes do you think will hard the clearcoat too much with menzerna IP. It is rated below 2.5.

My worst thing right now is that i can feel the etching in the clearcoat. It can be seen and felt. Some spots are almost an inch long.
