Good remote car starter?

you could do it yourself for under $100 ;)

I would advise against that. An alarm and remote start system are only as good as the install. I had a buddy who installed them at a shop do it for me at my house for half price. Pro Quality at half the price.

I'd stay away from the Bulldog brand at all costs ...

For Manual Trannies they make a special Module you must put it in neutral engage the parking brake and press a button on the remote it arms the remote start to fire up when you hit the buttons ...

some things I can't/will not do but I can open up my dash

and splice a dozen wires

just did one on friday for the misses x-mas gift

only cost me $40 bucks and a few hours

I agree that a lot of things are as only good as the install... that's why I do it!:2thumbs:

Is there a quick explanation on how to install a remote starter? I'm guessing it's not as simply as changing your own oil LOL

download the wiring diagram for your car

drop the lower dash

find and test the correct wires

splice into them

mount the relay, receiver, wiring harness & antenna

test and done:spot

They are easy to install on some cars, hard on others. It all depends on what features it has and how it is connected. Many of the newer units use a tach-less signal and those are 3 or 4 wires to install. I've installed 4 remote start alarms, the easiest one took about 4 hours, the hardest took two days, but both were the same brand model of alarm, just on different cars.

DEI makes some really nice units.

My boyfriend has a mazda rx8 and i want to get him a remote start for his car i'm looking at the Viper 5301. Is that a good one or should I look at something else?

....old thread.

anyway, Compustar FTMFW! :2thumbs:

1 mile range, don't need to see the car to start it, works with manual trans.

Are you serious? I would be worried about accidental starts and leaving the engine on...

I have a Viper alarm installed with a remote start option. I have started my car from over 1/2 mile away when I was on the metro coming home from D.C. on the red line. I wanted to make sure the car was nice and warm by the time I got to it. Once you get to the car you have to have your alarm to keep the car running otherwise the second you touch the brake to put the car into gear without the remote, the engine turns off. Additionally, my remote start turns itself off after 10 minutes.

On the viper I have you have to press a button two times in succession for about 2 seconds each time. I have had my keys in my pocket as well as in my back pack with my work related belongings and never has the car ever started inadvertently on me in the 11 months I've had the system.

I installed a code alarm system on my wife's 06 f150.

It has a 20min run time, and now that temps are below freezing at night as soon as I wake up I get it running (preset the controls) and it's nice and toasty by the time we get in to go to work.

CA also sells a stand alone remote start with a small button that attaches to the key chain. I believe these are the same units used by Ford. I want to get one for our Ranger.

I don't know where you live but if there is an auto zone around check them out they have two kinds and i shopped around about six months ago for one and found that they have the best one for the price it is about $90 dollars and has two remotes and a trunk popper (which you have to have an electric trunk popper not a cable to be able to use) the range for the remotes were about 1000 feet if i remember right and of course they come with all the other normal features but i looked for quite a while and if i ever needed another one that is where i would go it even comes with a DVD and 1 800 # to ease the installation period.

Good Luck!!

i had one on my Lifted Tacoma. It was a Clifford 3 way pager Remote with the auto start feature. It was a great thing to have so you can let the engine warm up and either have your vehicle cool down or warm up prior to entry.

You can also set the allowed time to keep it running before it would shut itself off. Accidental starts were never a issue as you had to hit a certain button twice in a row pretty quick to have it start up.

My dad has a really nice Viper on his car but the place that installed his only carries some AutoPage brand now. Anyone familiar with these?

AutoPage has been around a long time. I've been shopping and comparing and am having an AutoPage unit installed next week for $200.

Their Web site is here:

AutoPage - The Leader In Real Automotive Solutions - Security, Remote Starts, 2-Way Communication, Replacement Transmitter

Manuals are here:

Thanks! They did a nice install on my dad's car with his Viper so maybe I'll go with the AutoPage. I just really liked the Viper my dad got. LOL

I don't know if they still make Clifford or who took them over but the two I had from them were terrible, very unreliable.
