Good 1-step polish?

Tu-have you considered Werkstatt's Prime Strong?

I will be testing a new one-step polish/sealant/wax for Optimum, my understanding is it will be pretty much the production version since it should be a go soon. It is supposed to have decent light swirl and defect removal, some filling properties and a combination sealant/carnauba protection. I'll let you know how it works once I get a sample.

I have used Valuguard one-step with good results. I removed swirls and such from a navy blue suburban with success, and it has a polymer sealant mixed in, for good protection. Only problem is that it dusts a little more than I like, not as much as a lot of Meg's, but it's a good product.

Just look at all of the responses. Every single reply has been about finding a good 1-step polish. Not a single person had anything to say about what you are offering and what your customers expect. Look closely, 100% of the replies are technical. Not a single word about the business side of things. Sure, the replies will certainly help with the technical side of things however, they do not help to solve your problem of what your customers expect and what they are willing to pay.

It is up to you to go out there and 1) identify the customer and why that customer needs your service, 2) learn more about how your customers will measure the value of your service, 3) package your services in order to meet the needs of your customer, 4) become market driven, 5) find a need and fill it.

While your advice is very worthwhile and appreciated by everyone, the reason every reply was about finding a good one-step polish is due to keeping the thread on-topic... Too many threads get far too off-topic :spot

Start a thread about the ratio of Detailing vs Business Owning, and we can get very in-depth in that topic in its own thread :)

Scott, I have never thought about using Prime Strong as a 1-step. I knew it had a bit of defect removal power but I thought OC would be better at doing that.

Let me know how the 1-Step Optimum comes along.

Another vote for Meguiars #66 for a one step polish/wax. I use this on either an orange or white pad on the pc and it does a very good job for a one step. I sometimes use Optimum Compound on a white or orange pad followed by 66 on a white pad on for good 2 step job with good scratch removal and protection.

maybe a Hi-temp medium or heavy cut leveler. they supposedly finish down fairly well. A lot of your price is determined by local market. You might have to start at a lower price/lower end customer and work your way to a higher priced customer. If you price yourself too high initially you might price yourself out of business. Consider offering stage1 as a onestep polish/ sealant combo such as JWprime strong. Stage 2 being a 1 step polish and sealant and a stage 3 as a 2 step polish and sealant. Set your price based on what the local market will bare.

I have no problem getting customers. The only problem is that most of the time the customers will only settle for a 1 step polish. If their car requires more than a 1 step, I feel like I'm doing mediocre work, and being a perfectionist, it's pretty frustrating.

I separate the polish and sealant/wax step. What I mean with 1 step is a polish that finishes and has good cutting power, not one that works as an LSP as well. Sorry for the confusion.

But... I do my best with the conditions that are given to me.

I appreciate everyone's concerns/comments regarding this matter.

First off, I would like to thank you for your response. I absolutely understand that I'm not getting the right customers...

Again, you are absolutely right about "finding the right clients under the right terms". That is the root of my problem.

Tu Tustah,

You are welcome! Good to know my advice is appreciated.

I hear you 100%! In my area the customers I get can't even tell the difference between a wash and a wax job. They are just happy to get a cleaner car and not pay and arm and leg for the job. Usually I offer a cheap job to those types of customers and all I do on the paint, after a wash and clay, is either go over it with a one step or just go over it with Four Star 4-54 Sealant. The Sealant has excellent swirl hiding abilities and leaves the paint looks deep and wet.
