Going Under the Knife

Having surgery tomorrow morning... laminectomy, L4 and L5... trimming some ruptured disks in the lower back.

I know that some of you have experience with this. Any advice on rehab?

Good luck Jay ... best advise is to just get up and walk asap .... you are lucky to be in good shape before hand and no carrying extra weight :rockon
you will need to strengthen your core and then do any stretching you can tolerate... we will  for a speedy recovery :bigups

I had it further up - c4/5 disk replacement.

Really bummed me they used a "harvested" disk to replace line. It's like getting your car fixed - they use recycled/used bumpers instead of new ones.

Best advice I can give is get to rehab ASAP and follow what they say. It took me a year to get full range of motion back on my right arm, but I did their exercises faithfully.
BTW, when I woke up in recovery, ALL the pain was gone and has never returned.

LOL! I told the Doc "strictly OEM." He said my policy doesn't cover!

Thanks for the advice, Forrest.

Ron, Steve, JP, Al,

I appreciate the good thoughts. (Can't get my "multi-quote" to work right. Couldn't possibly have anything to do with pain pills, could it? LOL!)

Norah, it's great hearing from you. Thank you. (Was thinking about hijacking my own thread and thanking your governor and every AZ citizen, but didn't want to start WW3 on the forum. Especially since I'll be basically unconscious for about 24 hours.)

Jay

You are a luck man, I had disc's replaced last June and I still have severe pain when I walk.

I can not walk more than about 100 feet until I must sit down.

I have full range of motion and NO pain while sitting or lying but can not stand or walk.

I had the same procedure performed a decade or so ago. It helped dramatically for about three years and then things went South again. I had some complications and a fall and ended up having several fusions following that surgery. I don't think that's the way it goes for most people though it did take a bit longer than a week to be jumping around. I wish you lots of luck and hope this solves your problems.

Good luck with the surgery. No personal experience (knocking on wood) with that procedure, so no specific advice other choose your healthcare professionals carefully and then follow their directives.

See you on the other side.

I have no idea what a laminectomy is, but if it involves surgery, it can't be too good. Good luck with the procedure. WHEN you fully recover, shoot me a PM or give me a call. We can do a fishing trip together. You can show me how to get some snook.:rockon

definiton of laminectomy " surgical operation to remove the back of one or more vertebrae, usually to give access to the spinal cord or to relieve pressure on nerves."

Good Luck John Henry!!!
I guess I never worked hard enough to have back pain. I am a lucky fellow. What I do know about doctors is... if You trust them then listen to them and do what they say.
