glaze/sealer enough for protection???

i buffed my car the other day and the results were amazing. I've had many compliments of how clean it looks and im looking to keep it this way. They probably arent as good detail as you guys but i was pretty glad at what i did with me only being 19. I has some scratches still left over but the buffer didnt seem to want to take them out.

My steps were:

-wash

-clay

-buff orange pad and pin xmt #3

-buff white pad and pin xmt #1

-buff gray pad and pin xmt sealer/glaze

Do you guys think that the sealer is enough to keep the protection of the buff? what would you guys recommend me doing to help keep the paint looking great! BTW the car is black.

I'd assume since it's a sealer it should provide protection but i'm not sure how long. I like collinite 476 because its durability is top notch and I usually can't tell the difference between waxes/sealants. Glad to hear your car turned out well, got any pics you can put up?

Well i hear most guys like sealer over wax for black cars because it gives the black a wetter look. It still has tiny scratches here and there but i think they were deeper ones that i couldnt take out, o well im not professional and it still looked better than it did. Here are some pics of the car though. What do you guys think???

ahhhhh gotcha! Should i bother with a real wax or is the xmt finishing glaze that i used good enough? What would you guys recommend as a liquid wax for a decent price??

on another note: im amazed at the amount of people in this topic but slow responses. Maybe people just researching?

Would the xmt glaze i applied by classified as a sealant? I remember in the description it says it contains caranuba as a sealer. Should i just buy a paste wax and apply it over the glaze? Im just kinda confused as to what the xmt glaze i have actually does.

Actually, it's more of a liquid carnauba (there are some) with fillers. The gloss could be improved with a paste.

Would you recommend a few layers of the glaze or the 1 layer was enough? What brand of paste would you recommend that will last for a decent price? Thanks for the help btw.

Snakey - the answer is yes, you should put a real wax or sealant (collectively, "LSP" for Last-Step Product) on it to protect the finish for much longer than a glaze alone can.

As far as product recommendations - you said you were looking for something liquid, and cheap. That said, I believe the LSP you are looking for Collinite 845 Insulator Wax - it runs $15 at Harbor Freight (Store Locator) or online retailers (Link), and durability is top-notch (many users report 3-6 months per application). This is, IMHO, the best value for your money as far as liquid LSP's go. If you weren't so picky about it being liquid, Collinite 476s is a paste wax (still very easy to use) and supposedly has even more durability.

If you wanted something that sacrifices some durability for (supposedly) better looks, try picking up some S100 from a local motorcycle store (Harley Davidson stores, Suzuki dealers, etc) for around $15 a bottle. S100 is considered more of a "looks" wax, while Collinite waxes are considered more for their durability. Then again, many people claim that they can't see much of a difference between waxes.

I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to sealants, particularly cheap ones, although Meguiar's NXT 2.0 comes to mind as having good reviews, being locally available, and around $15. Zaino and Klasse are commonly-discussed sealants, but they aren't cheap, and are generally not locally available. I defer to others to give sealant recommendations.

Be aware that sealants are said to make the paint look "plastic-y" and really boost reflections, whereas waxes are said to give a look of depth and wetness to the paint. Many recommend waxes over sealants for flat (non-metallic/pearl) paints, particularly on dark-colored cars. However, since it is ultimately a personal preference, perhaps you should give both a shot and see which you like best.

Regarding there being so many views yet so few replies - many people lurk on these forums without posting. This is probably because the detailing world is chock full of different product choices, and it's tough to know what to recommend. Also, a lot of people (myself included) consider themselves newbs, and don't really feel qualified to give advice. Then again, it could be because people just can't be bothered. Anyways, don't get discouraged - you're in the right place.

supposidly the xmt finishing glaze is also somewhat a wax. Its a glaze but also contains carnuaba which makes it a liquid wax also. So a paste wax would also help in completing correct? also would i apply another coat of the glaze or just the 1 coat i did, sufficient enough to go ahead and apply the paste after?

I have a black car too. I have used DWG glaze (this seems to be for looks only, and is not supposed to last too long, or protect-it is an extra step I could do without), let cure for up to 12 hours; then I use EX-P Sealant and let cure for 12 hours. Then I top with Natty's Blue or Collinite 845. I really like the Collinite. I always put a wax over my sealant, it does enhance the look. I also use QD's like Meg UQD or FK425 after every two bucket CWG&G wash to maintain the gloss, and protect all those other products underneath. I am not a detailer, but like having my black car look "ridiculuous." People stare and comment all the time...on a minivan no less!

snakey51389- As a fan of the '94-'96 b-bodies (and hmmm....those don't look like stock exhaust tips  and your clear corners look like they fit well too) I'd like to help, but I just dunno from the product you're using, so I dunno what to tell you :nixweiss

Unless you want to apply some "regular" wax, either paste or liquid, I guess I'd just wait and see how the XMT stuff holds up.

[Heh heh, insert lecture here about using products without a thorough understanding of them ;) ]

OTOH, if it were mine, I'd probably want to make sure it's well-protected so I might put some Souveran over top of it, what with everything being Pinnacle brand so far. But of course Souveran costs a lot, and doesn't last long at all so you'd be redoing it all the time...so if it were *really* my Impala SS, I'd put some Collinite 476S on it and just wash it for a few months instead of rewaxing all the time. Yeah...I'd put some 476S over top of what's on there now.

^^ so it looks like ill be putting some collinite over the whole thing when i go the hood over again. Thanks for all the replies guys. Yeah i love these cars, i have a caprice impala clone but the paint is just trash. Ive tried to buff it but there is no cure for massive chips and rust.

I bought the xmt because it was on the autogeeks website and thought id give it a try. It was pretty cheap stuff and like i said i was inpressed with what i accomplished. So far i cant complain.

Ill be getting some collinite soon. Do you guys know if any places local might carry collinite or is it online buy only pretty much?
