Getting rid of smells?

I am not sure this is the correct spot to post this but here goes. I just purchased a 03 Nissan X-Terra with only 68k miles full maintnance history and super clean. I did a 1 step buff and seal until I get some time to really step it up in the shine dept. my issue is the previous owner worked at a local paper mill and the interior smells like the mill. I am not sure what product to use to clean the interior and rid of this smell. any ideas?

mx5mike- I would think "negative ion generator" but somebody...I think it's maybe John Kleven.. is using a different system/approach that is supposedly much better. Those are both kinda pricey though.

A not-so-involved approach is to just clean everyting conventionally (including extracting the carpets and any interior fabrics) and spraying one of the pro-grade "odor eliminators" on things that retain the smell. But note that the odor-killer stuff has to come in direct contact with the source of the odor or it won't work.

ok. I have already cleaned all the plastics and wiped everything down with 303. I will get the steam cleaner out and give everything a good going over and see how it goes with just water. Or should I use a cleaner? I am tempted with summer coming just to try to air it out and see how that works.

I use a cleaner and then follow up with the steamer. Sometimes I combine the two, but I've never run the cleaner through my steamers add-in tank. Just have to see how it goes, but if the odor-source is in the padding/etc. you're gonna have to do something more.

A thorough interior detail and ozone treatment is what needs to be done.

Hopefully that'll suffice. Some odors are incredibly hard to eradicate.

Sounds like you got the vinyl / plastic cleaning done. Next is to extract all the fabrics in the vehicle, seats and floor (and any that may be on the doors). Next, 1Z Einszett Klima-Cleaner Air Conditioner Treatment for the vents and recirc system. Next, an odour-eater. This can be either something like a Dakota Odour Bomb, or a chlorine dioxide system. Finally, a little tree air fresherner hung off the rear view mirror :chuckle:

I have recommended the CarPro SoPure spray to a few people and it has solved all of their issues. It is a much stronger product than just odor removal (it actually kills germs). It needs light to activate. AG sells it now. It is a very potent product.
