Getting a re-paint on the front end (maybe Clear Bra after)

Thanks Toml, I may think about that to get it home, but I'd be worried about them doing more damage to the car. The Audi A4 UltraSport sits pretty low.

I'm looking in all my Autobody suppliers catalogs to find out where to get the temporary protection film. Like the kind they have on car panels when they truck them from the factory/shipping dock to the dealers.

I think that stuff peels on then off. I could put it on then drive home and take it off once in the garage.

Hey lemme know what you find out...I'm in a similar situation.

I'm having GSR Stilez from here detail my car. But he's in Connecticut.

2 days later, I'm having Detailing Dynamics put on my 3M film. And they're based in Long Island.

So, I have alot of highway miles and a couple days between polishing and film. Our plan is to use Saran Wrap. If you can find some other commercially available stuff that I could get my hands on, that would be great!

Keep me in the loop...thanks!

Cant you leave the car at the dealership until the clear bra is done?

Nahh that's not an option, they wouldn't want the liability if something happens to it and I'm not big on leaving my baby anywhere's I can't keep a close eye on it.

Thanks though

Wow that's wierd cuz I actually was out in the garage last night thinking about how much saran wrap would I need to pull this off.

Anywho, I did some research today and here's what I found out.

When I asked someone I know who owns a bodyshop and works on high end cars, he said he did not know where they get that stuff the Factory puts on the cars before shipping. He reccommended 3M painters tape (wide as you can find it). Lay it on my jeans or something first to take off a little bit of the adheasive then go for it.

Ghetto but hey it would work.

I then caledl the Service Manager a John Holtz Audi and asked him where does the factory get that stuff from.

While he didn't know where it might be commerically available, he said it's clipped on and he would stash some away for me the next time his people are prepping new deliveries.

He knows I'm getting a re-paint and told me to do just what toml said, have it flat bedded home. I have both Audi Roadside assitance and Allstate Auto Club so why not get something for my money?

I told him I was worried about them damaging the car. He said that they routinely transport cars to and from there (Audi's, Porche, BMW) and he's yet to see them f'up cuz they know they will have to pay.

So those are the options I've got so far.

I know I'm obsessing over this but I can't live with I tell ya. The spot isn't down to metal (thank god) just sorta like a burn (about a quarter in size after I wetsanded it to get up the loose edges).

Like I said earlier, I was going to spot it with my paint gun but the supplies would've cost more than the re-paint.

I'll probaly get it flat bedded home, it's under the mileage limit so it won't cost me anything out of pocket and the Service Manager from Audi says I don't have to tell the Auto Club "why" the car can't be driven, just where it's at and where it needs to go.

As for the installer for the Clear Bra, he's going to either have to work outta my garage like I do or make it "very much" worth my wild to put that car back on the street before the install is done.

This whole thing is upsetting my nerves. I need a 1/2 gal of Eddy's Vanilla and Chocolate Chip cookies with Fudge ice cream to sorta unwind.

Don't worry about the tow screwing it up, just get a good tow company that has ONLY flat beds and knows what they are doing. We got my old car up in about 15 minutes without the lip ever touching the ground, and I doubt your car is this low :)

You can't even get you shoe under this lip!!

Conclusion:

Well I got my Baby back from the body shop at the dealership today. After all that discussion on how to get it home without chipping, I ended up driving it back (like slower than I ever have). Don't think I ever left 3rd gear.

We haven't been having our usual winter and while it did snow some yesterday, it was sunny and the roads clear today but cold so nothing was melting. So drove home, keeping like 3 cars behind anyone else, esp trucks and got her home clean as can be (bit dusty though)

There is some "peel" on the hood but not that noticeable I have seen much worse. They did a number on my engine bay (sanding sludge and dust) and that will need to be detailed.

I did find one spot on the front fender with overspray but was able to take it off using HT Light Cut Leveler with a MF.

Bodyshops do the worse detailing, the hood has every kind of pad swirls and scratches from using some shop towel to take off residue.

All I did tonight was wash her down so I could see what's what.

Thanks everyone for kicking in the suggestions, now I have to wait for part two (paint protection film).

Ohh I almost forgot, when I was paying for the work, I asked the manager could I meet the Paint Tech so I could ask some questions for future reference. "sure I'll send her right out".

Well in a few minutes a girl comes out and asks me "can I help you", I told her I was wating for the painter and she said "yup, thats me".

Go figure

Yeah, I'd probably feel more comfortable with a lady painter- less chance of "I know everything, I"m so great" attitude. Gee, guess that's reverse-sexism huh :o

Glad to hear you got it home OK.

You gonna knock the swirls down now or wait until the paint's a little harder?

Setec/Accumulator:

I was pretty amazed as I never thought of Autobody work as something that a girl would want to get into though and yes she was very nice. Not like (I do this for a living and you don't) type's I usually met at the bodyshops.

The Audi is going to be in the garage for at least a month (they said I should wait maybe 45 to 60 days for before trying the Paint Film Protection cuz the cold weather will take longer for the paint to cure).

I'm itching to knock the bodyshop swirls and haze off the newly painted parts. But I'm also about $700.00 lighter in the azz from the re-paint and don't want to make another trip anytime soon.

Today I thought about maybe getting out the PC and some Optimum w/a polishing pad but I've never had any success with that tool. I guess I'm worried about generating too much heat with the Dewalt rotary but this stuff is mostly surface marring and shouldn't require much work

I guess maybe now is the time for that patience thing you guys were talking about b4.

Really wish I had another heat source out there I could leave running T47 (was in the low 20's last night)

In my experience 45-60 days is still cutting it a little close with baked S-H paint, so with the cold weather I'd wait as long as you can stand it ;)

I'd probably wait at least a week and then consider corrrecting it with the PC. FWIW, that's what I did on the S8 following the deer-incident repairs. I just couldn't stand some of the marring they'd inflicted on it, so I fixed things a little with a 2K sanding block, the PC, and by hand fairly soon after painting. Then I waited until it had cured and used the rotary and Cyclo to get everything as good as I could.

I brought my A4 Ultrasport back in Sept 04 new of the lot and like any good Autopian have kept her to the "ooh's and ahh's" standard.

Despite the work required and it's frequency nothing looks better (IMHO) than a car with Black Paint when it's poppin.

Trouble is all the leading parts of the car are so rock chipped and pitted in such a short period of time that it's beyond touch-up bottles and pens. Throw two small spots (one each on the hood and bumper) were I say the paint failed and Audi says it's external damage and I give up.

I got quoted $300.00 a piece for the hood and bumper/spoiler which is a bargin compared to when I found out how much it would cost me to do it myself. Seems German Paint in the US is very pricey.

Anywho I stopped by the local installer for X-Pel film protection and he wants $1,000.00 to put the full Clear Kit on or $800.00 for the bumper/spoiler and hood.

Does that sound right?
We are X-Pel installers here in Illinois and we would charge about half of your quoted price!

Accumulator:

Yeah I think I'll leave the re-painted parts till next week or two, like I said the car's not going to be driven and I can work on the fenders and mirrors to get them in shape for the install in the meanwhile. No sense rushing it.

yankees1;

Thanks dude, I found another guy who will do the kit for $500.00 but I don't think he's seen a A4 Ultrasport (the front end is different) so I need to get with him on that when the time comes.

Which is increasingly not looking like anytime soon.
