Hey Gang:

I finally gave her a bath, dried with my new waffle weave (MFTech...pretty sweet BTW). Was putting some AIO on the hood, and noticed a fingerprint....went to buff it off, and.....NOTHING!!!! Sucker is under the clearcoat!!! Bummer!! So I finished AIO the hood, which looks great, but when you look at the right way, there is a nice souvenir from whoever put the clearcoat on.....THANKS a bunch Bavarian Motorishche Werke!!!! Hopefully I will be able to posts some pics soon!

LOL Nagchampa:

I would take it back if I could....maybe I should report it to some quality control board with BMW....what do you think??? Just so they will know the MF's (no, not MicroFiber) are putting thumbprints on the cars.

I agree...Register a complaint with BMW NA.

I think they are in Woodcliff Lakes, N.J.

That will get some attention.

They might want you to bring your car to the dealer

for an evualiation.

Unless it really stands out or bothers you, I wouldn't let them touch it with a ten foot pole.

Where is it anyway? The print.

It is about smack in the middle of the hood, maybe just a little closer to the BMW emblem. I really only noticed it last night when I had the car in the garage under the lights. It doesn't really bother me that much....right now anyway. I will check out the complaint site (is there a site do you know?)

Yeh , Bayarische Motoren Werke in Deutschland:D :wavey

Make sure your hood has NOT been repainted/cleared. I dont know, but I would think BMW would use automated methods to paint, and the same for curing. I dont see why anyone would need to mess with the hood, in their sterile paint enviroment. I could be wrong. :nixweiss

Well, I got the car brand new, and just washed it once every 10 days or so, and had not put any wax, detailer, anything on the hood, and then I saw it as I was AIO'ing (hey, I just invented a new Autopia verb), tried to buff it out and when you look at it in the right light, it really is embedded into the clearcoat, I will have to try and reproduce a good picture of it to show everyone.

I think that Bumpers Plus has a good point.

With all the automatic painting that is done at the factory

how can a finger print get under the clearcoat

Somthing must have happened in the paint process.

If you register a complaint in writing now, you will have

some recourse later if the hood paint fades or the acid from the print reacts with the finish in any way.

The reason I say "in writing" is because you will have a legal leg to stand on.

They have to answer you letter in writing. Lawyers call that

documentation. They will try to avoid putting anything in writing.

I just thought that I would give you some options...

I hope this whole thing turns out to be nothing.....

They could put on a new hood which was painted at the factory?

Cars that are damaged in route from the mfr may have had a panel repaired or resprayed by a body shop. The vehicle is still sold as new, because technically it's being delivered with the defects repaired (i.e., in "new" condition), and it's never been sold or titled before. So, even vehicles that have been painted by an automated process at the factory may have been partially re-painted by some guy at a bodyshop . . . that might explain the thumbprint.

I think that the practice is wrong, but it does happen.
