nice. if i am reading that chart correctly it looks like Pennzoil out performs it though, right?

Those charts have very little to do with real life engine wear. They have been used by Amsoil for ages to "prove" their oil is better. While its a good oil, that test would have you think you'd get 4x more engine wear using M1, and that is bunk.

Not only that, but the Castrol on the chart is a "Syntec"...I'm not sure if they make a Syntec 0W, but it certainly doesn't say "German Castrol", and also the Mobil 1 is not only 5W (which may be different from the 0W), but it's the "Extended Performance" which is not the regular SM oil.

As Yakky pointed out, The 4 ball wear test is promoted by Amsoil to market there oil. Not a true indicator of an oils performance in an engine, two different things all together.

I am also on BITOG. I still can't figure out what is that "goofy looking green stuff". Can you enlighten me please? Thanks!

BTW, a little off topic, I've been using Mobil 1 oil and filters. After reading a ton on BITOG I'm kinda swayed to switch to Pennzoil Platinum not so much for the price but everyone on that site says that it's a better oil than Mobil 1. Any thoughts?

M1EP is the old M1 syn formula.

If by that you mean the Group IV, no it's not, it's the SL formula that has an antiwear additive that can degrade catalyst performance and was reduced/removed by the API in the SM spec.

Not everyone holds the idea that Platinum is better than Mobil 1. Just remember, everybody has an opinion, some of those opinions are biased for whatever the reason and most of those opinions are not based on actually tearing down an engine, which is really the true test to see what your oil is doing.

Link?

I've not seen that confirmed by anyone other than desk jockeys, so feel free to set me straight.

You're absolutely right. I guess I exaggerated when I said "everyone". I should have said "a lot of guys on that site".

Thanks for the reminder. I guess I'll stick with what I've got. If it ain't broke, won't fix it.

There used to be a page at the API site that discussed this, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore (the difference between SL and SM), the idea that the M1 EP is the SL formula was discussed at BITOG. The EP certainly exceeds the SM limits for (whatever that additive was), since it only meets SL, not SM.
