General Question

I don't know this Halden guy. But, in all fairnes to him, the customer does admit to washing the car and doing so a bit aggressively. Apparently, after this guy had come and gone, the finish "started to fog up." The owner tried to wash the fog away and, probably in the process, worked some marring into the finish. We've had some pretty cold and balmy days here. I think his lsp flashed. The owner said he used Swissvax, applied with his bare hands. There was no damage, at least none claimed by the owner. He was just kind of miffed that the finish "Fogged up". WHen I told him what I would charge for the clean up - essentially a completed paint correction - he passed. Said that he had had enough of the so called exotic detailers.

Well, this was the complaint about Holden_C (that's a Catcher In The Rye joke, BTW), as well as other hack detailers, is that customers lose faith in "detailing" and the competent detailers get a bad name as well.

I would have about 12-14 hours into the job. Don't think I could stomach a freebie. Every defect shows pretty well on the lines of this car. I may give him a call in a few weeks once he's had some time. Maybe a winter storage clean up??

I'm really curious how this guy gets the word out all over the Country? Frankly, I would love to employ his marketing tactics. Every exotic car owner I've ever serviced was referred. I don't know of anyone I've worked with that would just hand over their $1m car to someone they've never heard of??

On the internet, you can be who you want to be. Ol' Holden apparently had the guy in FL half convinced he was Todd. (just to clarify, apparently the owner said something like "oh, are you that guy I've seen with those really detailed write-ups of exotic cars on the detailing forums?", and Holden/Tyler/dipstick didn't say no--I guess he said "yeah, I post on detailing forums"). His MO was to troll the exotic car forums, where people are not as well-versed at detailing as here, and promote himself as a detailing expert. The links came out of the woodwork when the infamous Gallardo story broke, and it appeared he was a member of every exotic-owner forum there was, usually with the description of "detailing expert" or something like that under his user name.

So there's your marketing plan.

That’s what I was thinking.

Or maybe just a 1’x1’ square, explaining/demonstrating everything you’re doing, why you’re doing it and why it would take so long (i.e. cost so much) to do the whole car.

That way he has proof it will work, a rational explanation why and a direct demonstration of the real cost (and a constant reminder of what his car could look like ;) ).

pc.

Yeah, I don't think that would have done much for him at this point. He's pretty disgusted. And, sadly, I think I may have had something to do with that. I don't think, until I showed up, that he thought the end result was so bad.

Yea sometimes explaining the issues to some people will actually result in getting them even more jaded on the subject. Sad that this tool gets to make a nicer living than most will ever dream of by hacking up and destroying high dollars cars.

How the hell? I have to say at this point anyone that is paying that kind of money to have anyone detail their car needs to do their due diligence.

I totally agree! On occasion, I've been able to fetch top dollar for certain cars, which require a little more time. But, in EVERY case, the owner had been referred and didn't just pull my name out of a hat.

Holy crap! What freakin hotel did he put him up at and did he fly him first class? A ticket to Toronto isn't that expensive!

If he's still charging what he used to, Tyler's "Perfection" detail was ~$4k. So that, plus a plane ticket and hotel....

Edit: what kind of f-car is it, anyway? I cant tell from the pic.

O M G...

POS is still at it turning potential clients into angry anti-detailer-types.

How can a true hack do so well, and guys that bust their butts get left in the cold?

marketing indeed....
