i gave my porter cable one more try to see if it gets rif of all the swirls. well it didnt. i actually did it oustide in the sun to make sure they were gone, but most were still theree. i used the yellow pad with the menzera intense polish and the results were not good. i dont think its the machines fault or anything. maybe i just need a harsher prodduct to use with the machine. the color of the car is red so maybe i do need a harsher product. please post with some alternatives that i can use with the porter cable.

What kind of car do you have?

I have very good luck using IP with an orange pad to remove swirls & light scratches. Start off at 4, and work slooooowwwww, then bump up the speed to 5.5/6. I go east, west, then north, south on the flats, just the opposite on the sides. Use overlapping passes and take your time. You'll notice the polish break down -gets a softer looking white haze look. Then it's time to wipe off. Mix up a bottle of isopropyl alcohol/water. Mist the panel, and wipe clean. Back the car out into the direct sunlight and inspect. If the swirls are gone move on to a polishing pad & FPII.

I've never had much luck with yellow pads via the PC. They seem a bit too course, and can actually put scratches/swirls in, as your attempting to take them out. An orange pad is about as aggressive as I go.

The PC pads that I've had the best luck with are the Lake Country Advanced Hi-Gloss pads. They work very well with the PC.

Hope this helps. Don't give up!!!

i have a red 2000 transam. i want to try another product like maybe poorboys 2.5 or something. it did get rid of some swirls but not all.

It could result from the hardness of the car's paint. I would suggest you using MEGS polishing pad with #83. Give it a try. You may have to go over the area a few times if the swirls do not go in the first attempt. It doesn't necessarily mean that the swirls will disappear the first time you polish it. So don't give up yet. It happened to me when I first started detailing my car. MEGS polishing pad and #83 should be strong enough to get rid of swirls. Move the machine around slowly and don't buff until it turns dry ( it will turn dusty when you buff dry. it's a sign) Try to clean pad as often as you can when using 83.

Good luck

Sorry if this is a little OT. But I'm wondering when people talk about a "yellow" or an "orange" pad, are they talking about pads from a specific manufacturer or is there some kind of universal colour code I'm not aware of?

Maybe it's just me but it makes it hard sometimes to know what kind of pad people are talking about.

Thanks. :)

Oh, and BTW borisshnitkin, #83 is Meguiar's Dual Action Cleaner Polish (DACP). It's the most aggressive polish in their line that they recommend with a PC.

If the IP's not working, step up to the powergloss and then go to finer polishes. Don't do that until your certain that you painstakingly went over the car with the IP and the appropriate pad 1st. Most times that followed by FP2 will tackle the job...

Why did you do the whole car if one section wasnt getting the results you wanted?

Who makes your pads?

How much polish did you use

How long did you polish a 2x2 area?

Are your pads perfectly clean before you started?

In the sun, how did you remove the polish, and with what?

Did you get "dusting"?

If yes, did you stop or keep going?>

Did you clay before you polished?

Did you wash your car first?

Was your towels perfectly clean before you started?

At any time did the pad or the towels land on the ground>?

What speed did you work the polish?

How much downwards pressure did you apply?

yes i did the whole process of washing, claying, washing again and then used the pc. i did it outside the first time when the sun was down and didnt really see all the swirls. finally when i pulled into the garage u could have seen some. i didnt give too much down pressure, the pads and towels were new, i didnt get dusting untill today when i tried it over.

You may have got dusting the second time due to old product drying in the pad, its happened to me.

How long do you work the polish?

I spend about an hour for a fender, how long does it take for you?

The PC doesnt make removing defects fast, it just makes it do-able.

I never try Poorboys 2.5. It's not available in my country. You should go out and buy orange pad from Sonus, use it with Meguiar's Dual Action/Cleaner polish #83. This should be able to get rid of swirls. However, some might suggest other polish that is easier to work with. But I think #83 is good for heavy swirls.

I think you really should take some pics and post them here. It's hard to comment without some pix...

Good luck and Keep us posted.

I don't know if other manufacturer's use the same coloring scheme, but generally we're talking about Lake Country pads. The yellow pad is a cutting pad - probably the most aggressive "foam" pad you'll find. The orange pad is the next step down, and is a very versatile pad for taking out those lighter scratches/swirls when used with the proper product.

Thanks for the reply, Lore.

I own several Lake County pads (white polishing and grey finishing). I wasn't aware they make a yellow cutting pad. On their website they list an orange cutting pad, but no yellow one. Maybe you're referring to their new "constant pressure" pads? I know Meguiar's make a yellow polishing pad......and on it goes :nixweiss:
