Gas Smell!!!!

This is self explanitory. A gas can leaked in the car. I thought it would evaporate, bit the smell still exists. Any suggestions?

Phil.

Yeah that stinks!

Since you di dnot tell us where the spill was I will give you a general remedy for just about all areas.

First do NOT use an extractor to remove any part of the spill, even after it has dried, because the fumes may still be flammable.

Go buy several boxes of Baking Soda and pour them in shallow bowls or paper sacks and set them out in the car. Empty them out weekly and add more. Do this for a few weeks and see if it helps.

You may also need to remove the carpet from the car and take it to a coin op car wash, hit it with the high pressure soap and then the high pressure rinse. It should be safe after this to use a wet/dry vac or an extractor to remove excess water. Leave it out in the sun if possible to dry completely before putting it back in the car. This method is extreme and is time consuming but perhaps the best way to get rid of the smell.

Upholstrey, after a few weeks of the Baking Soda, can be dri-cleaned with something like Blue Corals Foaming Carpet Cleaner. Buy the one with the odor nuetralizers.

Hope that helps,
Anthony

Ive also used Anthony's methods, and add that if the spill is in the trunk, have had limited success with putting charcoal bricks in the re for about a week.

Gas smells terrible even after it dries. I would try anthonys method also. Anthony could you use some kind of tropical scent afterwards. ?

I can just see it .....

Tropical Scent: Ahh yes, the old getting gas in Hawaii smell :)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Hmmm .... one trick to get rid of gas is to convert it to water and carbon dioxide. Neither of them smell.

So go ahead, light the match and burn it out :D

Frozen and Phil,

After a few weeks of trying to "soak" up the fumes and odors you can try a product like Fabreeze, the one that nuetralizes odors instead of covering them up.

Most odors are organic in nature and can be eradicated with the right nuetralizer, like spilled milk, eggs, urine, vomit and little critters making nests in the car somewhere or God forbid a skunk spraying in your car!! Gas is not organic so nuetralizers will have only a limited effect on the gas smell BUT it will help out. You can go to a Feed & Tackle store, ones that sell stuff for horses and farmers/ranchers and buy some stuff thathelps get rid of skunk odors, buy a syringe and INJECT the liquid into your seats, carpets and/or trunk area.

You can also try www.topoftheline.com and click on the link for "Interior Cleaning" and I THINK you will find there several products for odor removal.

Good Luck,
Anthony
