Garaged vs not garaged

Ok so I bought a new car about 3 months ago and also moved into a location where I have a garage.



I've traditionally updated my "wax" ever 3 months but I was wondering what kind of durabilty difference it will make that now i have a car that is garaged vs outside all the time?



I work 2nd shift so most of the time the car only sees sun from 3pm till sunset which I would assume would be a very large factor in extending the longevity of protection, especially the interior leather.



Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there and see what the theories are. :nixweiss



Right now I have AIO with 3 coats of KSG which I maintain with sonus wash and spirtz. On the interior I use 303 and autoglym leather care.
 
Well, I don't need to tell you that having the car in a garage can cut exposure to the elements by up to two thirds...that's that much less pollen, acid rain, industrial fallout, bird crap. You should be able to wash the car less...my opinion is the protection will last much longer, and of course the reduced sun damage to the interior that you mentioned, but also to exterior trim and paint.
 
yeah, i figure one of the best benefits would be to the rubber seals and stuff that always seem to be the first to go on a car.

If you have a garage-kept car, what would the frequency of car washing be? Depending on your OCD nature. ;)



Currently, even though I take it out and it's garage-kept, I'm still of the mind that there's a lot of filth that's picked up on driving it every day or every 2nd day. So I'm still obsessive about cleaning it every free weekend I get and putting an extra layer of SG on it to keep it protected.



Am I a little overboard? Or is it more attachment to the vehicle you're taking care of vs. what is ACTUALLY required in terms of maintenance?

I'm right there with you. Everytime I pull out of the garage I worry about what's getting on my car. :nixweiss :shocked

Did you read DavidB's how to article on quick detailing?



At some juncture you may reach the point of diminishing returns, which has consequences.
 
If you are good in keeping the car covered in the garage, then your wax will last longer. You will also be less prone(not immune of course) to oxidation of body parts and metal that isn't rustproofed.



It isn't a necessity that you have a garage, bc a secure lot with an excellent car cover like the supremeweave by calcarcover will do a lot for you in terms of keeping your car relatively dry. However, if and when you get a chance to get a garage........grab it!!!

Not sure it's a fair comparison, but at home I have a couple cars in the family garage. If they are driven daily, they see a wash every 1-2 weeks. If only driven on weekends, they only see a wash once a month.



My beater car sits outside near lots of trees at school 24/7. Even after washing, it's covered in filth after one week. This means I have to use a stronger car wash solution to wash it. This combined with the elements attacking the finish, causes the wax fail earlier. Also, this means I have clay much more frequently, especially if I don't have time to wash it as much.



Garaging not only helps your protectant last longer, but in my case at least, it allows me to maintain a high quality finish with much less effort. Washing is easier, less claying, less polishing, less waxing. I like to work on my paint as much as the next guy, but the less I touch my car, the less I can induce swirls.

PS: If it was not my beater sitting outside 24/7, and something I cared more about, I would consider a car cover for when the clear is relatively clean.
