Garage door opener problem....

The door goes up nice - smooth and quite. But when the door shuts, it is very loud and makes a chattering sound during the start of the close. I sprayed some WD-40 on the track and that helped alittle, but that mostly made the opening of the door smoother. Any sugestions?

We had that problem in our garage a long time ago. We just soaked it with WD-40 along the tracks and the springs. I don't know but the sound went away after a few openings and closings so we're happy.

WD-40 is a great way to clean the track, hinges, screw and chain but it really doesn't provide long term lubrication.

I used to work in a bike shop and we would always warn customers about using WD-40 for anything other than cleanup.

Any Hardware store sells the right lubricant for your door, it's cheap insurance for $5 - 6 it costs and will last you a couple of years.

Chatter can be caused by worn screw, slipping drive mechanism or just poor lubrication.

Make sure all the hardware on the door (hinges) and the tracks is tight and secure. This stuff can loosen up over time.

Mine quit working altogether once, and I couldn't figure out why. It would just hum. I was amazed at how many of the hinges and support brackets had become loose. Tightened everything up and it worked like a charm.
