Bass...silicones are detrimental to vinyl and rubber. The fact that almost all vinyl and rubber "protectants" contain silicones amazes me.

On my Cobra, for example, I dry the engine compartment after wash and use that damp towell to wipe down. Just like drying out the door jambs. Then, a touch of 303 and we're good as new.

Umm, you are aware that much of the rubber components under the hood are silicone rubber? Most radiator and heating hoses, plug wires and caps, o-rings, even your window and door seals are silicone rubber. Silicone does not cause rubber to deteriorate.



Silicone come in many forms some of which are very beneficial to rubber and PVC. Silicone makes rubber and vinyl more flexible throughout a wide range of temperatures, it provides electrical insulating characteristics, it provides UV protection. The list goes on but the point is that all silicones are not necessarily bad.
 
You are correct that silicone and rubber does work together.



In fact, all my dive gear (Scuba-Pro) is maintained with a food grade silicone product. All hoses, gaskets etc all treated to keep them supple and soft.



I've dressed several hoses with the same silicone I use for the dive gear on all of my rubber door gaskets, removable top rubber seals and all others.



So far, I still use 303 mostly for engine detail work. You don't have to wipe it off, but it helps keep the dirt/dust down if it's worked in. That was the beauty of Megs EK. It dries hard, no film.



The 1Z Cockpit premium works well, but costly.



In place of EK, you could use any good floor wax. A commercial grade type worked well on my suspension parts. Lasted a long time, but then again, I do not drive the SC430 in rain.



For quick and easy engine detail the CD-2 product I keep hearing and seeing pics on seems to fit the bill!



It's all a matter of trial and error on what works welll and what sucks. In time you find the one that works best for you and stick with it. That's if you have any self control.

Nope, Protectant for the engine bay.



I clean engines with Megs APC+ and other products if it's really bad.
