FS: Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

well i was just suggesting if he was going to beable to step up to the 30d.. he could get one of those lenes..instead.. which ever one he felt he would use the most and work with that.. not to go out and get all three..if I could those are the three that i would chose and then go on to some prime lenes after that it would give you a great set of lenes.. to work off of in a large range..

Well, thought I'd let you all know that i did indeed go with the 24-105mm f/4 L. I was extremely close to the 30D but I finally went for the wiser choice and I can't wait to see how it works out! :)

I'm also waiting on a possible deal from a local Wolf Camera who receieved 5 new 20Ds when they ordered 30Ds awhile back. They've sat in the store for the past 6 months and they can't sell them because the manager has no price. I may be able to, (after he gives me a call back) get them for hopefully 750 ea. (maybe a bit more or less but it's the kit so eBay the 18-55) :) If that happens, the XT hits the dust and the 20D comes in.

Thanks everyone again for all the guidance! It'll be great to get out and have some fun taking some photos!

Awesome Garret, I think you'll be quite pleased with the lens, I know I saw a huge difference from my 28-135mm to my 70-200mm, plus you got IS :) Once you go "L" your not gonna go back!

$750 for a new 20D is awesome. Let me know if you can pick me one up too, as I doubt they'll drop that low in price.

:) Sure thing John; I had you in mind if he lets me take them at that price (Not to mention 3 others; not bad of a salesguy eh? :))

It was a tough call between the 2.8 24-70 and the 24-105 but since I won't be buying the 70-200 or 100-400 L lenses anytime soon, I figured I'd get the most out of the 24-105 (not to mention current-gen IS and much lighter). Fred Miranda was also a huge help and learned a lot there for my future references. I also figure that if I can't get the price for the 20D, I'll just put a little aside for next March for the 30Dn or 40D which I would probably then appreciate much more than a 30D now.

Cheers,

Garrett

Cool, thanks man :)

As for the 24-70mm f/2.8L vs 24-105mm f/4L IS; you definitely made the better choice. I shot a couple indoor events in poor lighting conditions, and figured I could put my 17-50mm f/2.8 to test; and most of my shots came out bad. :(

So many people online rave about f/2.8 lens for poor light situations, but I just had two terrible experiences with them. As a result I'm just gonna buy an external flash, and not worry about "super fast" lens. F/4 is fine for me. So the extra range you gain, as well as the IS definitely makes it a better buy then the 24-70mm f/2.8L IMO.

Make sure you post some pictures up with it.

It's been awhile since I've been back here (a mini vacation into photgraphy and I'm starting to miss my home here :() and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone here keeping me aligned in purchasing an L lens over a new body. I received my 24-105mm today and I am just astonished by it.

The build quality is what I feel every lens should be (pure solid) and it feels like quality. It's just such a relief to own something nice again--like buying a cheap watch versus an Omega Seamaster and you just appreciate the extra work into the build quality making it worth the extra money. Very smooth zoom; something I hated on the 28-135 due to the teloscoping design and cheap plastic and an awesome auto-focus response. Most importantly, I'm "wow'ed" by its excellent image quality.

The IS has amazed me and I've only had a slight opportunity to test drive it out but it's night-and-day compared to the '98 IS in the 28-135 (can't remember if it was first-gen or second).

It's been storming today (had a very close tornado touchdown) and I thought it would only be nice to inaugurate my new lens by taking it out stormchasing with a meteorologist :). Sadly I didn't get too many neat shots but I did take a photo right before that I felt demonstrated my love for the "L"

(Shot Wide Open, Unedited, Nice Bokeh, Not bad for 1/20s eh :))

Garrett:

Gotta love the power of L! :getdown

Seriously it's a great lens, and should treat you well for a while. That picture you posted is very nice. Extremely clear and sharp, and great bokeh. Also as you noted the build quality on the lens is bar none, and blows the 28-135mm out of the water. I also believe it has a newer generation IS system. Glad your happy with your purchase, with more and more people wanting a new dSLR I can't stress how important good glass is.

Looking forward to more pics, you don't have anymore excuses Garrett!
