front seat take out

I am doing my first detail on my dad's 2003 Honda Accord. I was wondering...if I take out the front seats..will I have to do any wiring? Because both seats are power seats and are both heated..and I can't reach some spots with my vacuum because of the seats.

Thanks.

The only issue you may come across is if there is an airbag in the seat.

Very good point. I'd check with the dealer to see how they recommend removal. You might have to turn the power to the battery off prior or it could turn your SRS light on. I see it all the time on Mercedes with side air bags. You need to disconnect both battery cables before removing the door panel or you'll be going to the dealer to have the light turned off.

Glad others chimed in - I have never had to remove seats with airbags built in.

It looks like the 03 Accord does have these airbags though....

"For frontal impact protection, both the driver and front seat passenger have dual-stage Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags. Driver's and front passenger's side airbags are now standard on EX 4-cylinder models and all V6 models, and available on LX 4-cylinder models."

If you do not handle these seats with care and one of the bags gets damaged they are very costly. If you try unplugging it while battery is on, you will trip the sensor in the bag and it is no good.

Are you sure about that rydawg? I'm under the impression that if an air bag isn't disabled properly, it only trips a fault code. I've never heard of it destroying one? Alot of seat air bags aren't serviceable (per manufacturer's specs) and they make you replace the entire seat assembly including the frame $$$. I can't see a manufacturer making this that user unfriendly.

I also fix cars and have had a few people come in and had faulty bags. One person said they took the seat out to clean underneath. I tried reseting the code but would not allow me to and said it was a faulty air bag. I took the bag out and looked perfect. I got one from a used center and replaced it and it was like new with no lights. Some dealer told me a bag can be reset though but it has to be sent out.

Rule #1. Always unhook the battery before removing any wires under the seat. All yellow connectors are SRS.

I've never come across a car I can't clean without taking the front seats out...sometimes they get real tricky between the seat and the console...but not worth the time and effort IMO to take them out. Rear seats, however, I take out all the time...lots of neat things to find under there!

Interesting. How'd you try resetting it? Dealerships (or mobile techs with the proper software), can usually reset the SRS system for 1 hr. mechanical labor. That would suck having to dismantle the seat just to get at the air bag. Be careful using used airbags. You're taking on alot of exposure/liability putting one in if you do this as part of your business. :scared: Insurance companies will do anything to save a $, but they won't allow any used SRS. Alot of large used part yards don't even bother inventoring them.

Thanks guys...And yeah..I saw a yellow cable under the seat but I didn't know how to disconnect it so I just left the seat in..hahah.
