FREE CarFax

Here's a bargain:

This was on a D.C. TV station, but It seems to work throughout the country. You can get 1 free CarFax report (seems to be per computer) at:

www.nbc4.com

About half-way down the middle column, under "Online Extras" click on "Get A Free Carfax Vehicle History Report". They ask for a zip code, so it might be useful to know that a random one local to the TV station is 22182. The report I received was 10 pages.

Interested to hear about your experience if you try it.

Yep I did 4 today;) LOL

the 23rd is the last day for it as well...Hurry!

edit: I did 6 today now.. LOL cool to see where some of my old cars are now...Yet sad to hear about a few of them:(

Wow, if I paid for both the Carfax's I just ran I would be very disappointed.

The first one I ran was NOT accurate. It said there was one owner but in actuality there were three.

The second one I ran was also NOT Accurate. It said there were two owners when there is only one.

Now if Carfax can't be accurate about OWNERSHIP... How could the rest be valid?

I know it was free... At least now I know not to turn to Carfax for answers.

Many repair shops never report anything to CarFax. It is not a trustworthy report, IMO.

Repair shops don't actually report anything to CarFax. They get their data from the police and insurance companies. So if you get in an accident and the police don't come and you fix the car without insurance there is no way for CarFax to find out. The best way to find out if a car was ever in a wreck is to inspect it. So much shady business going on these days that I would never buy a car sight unseen.

Well my repair shop sure didn't. LOL

My personal experience. I was rear-ended a few years back. The police were called and the other driver was cited. The car received over $8K in damage and was repaired by a highly recommended body shop. That accident never showed up on CarFax. The body shop stated that they never send anything to CarFax as they repair the car to like new specifications and give a lifetime guarantee on the repair. Neither my insurer nor the other driver's insurer reported anything to CarFax. I'm left to assume that CarFax is unreliable.

A lot of people are quick to dismiss vehicle history reports as useless. They indeed are useless for proving a vehicle is accident free. However they are a fantastic glimpse at a used car's history. I couldn't imagine shopping for a used car without them. I use them to weed out cars that are clearly bad example and then always follow up with a personal inspection.

I can't imagine how anyone would actually trust a sheet of paper versus a professional inspection.

The thing with vehicle history reports is they just pick up data that is reported. It's just 1 guide among others that can assist you with weeding out a car. Are they useless...heck no! But I just wouldn't go out and buy a car with just this 1 tool in my belt.
