Ford Escape detail

With the temp sitting about mid 20's here today, I figured a nice day to detailing my good mates Dad's car. The only time its washed it through an Automatic wash or when it sits in the rain...



I first washed it with Poorboys wash, Clay'd with Clay magic with lube.



Then I hit it with 2.5SSR Poorboys with a PC, then 2 coats of Poorboys EX-P, then a layer of Natty's wax. Dressed all door rubbers with 1-Z gummiphege (sp)... I am pretty happy with the results, considering the car has done 30,000kms+ and is driven everyday. The rims where cleaned with Poorboys spray and rinse and dressed with Auto Glym tyre shine.



Thoughts, things I could have done differently, I am still mastering the PC, 2nd car I have done with it.

This is a single stage paint I believe, that seems very scratch resistant, but doesn't want to shine all that well...



Any way, it killed a few lazy hours on a Sunday afternoon.

All I can say about the RO is not to rush it, take your time and go over an area 2 or 3 or more times until it is right if needed. You wont master it straight away, but give it time and you will become quite proficient, even just as a "weekend warrior".

I would have done a few more steps but you may of been low on time.

Are you sure it was single stage paint?!? Were you getting red paint transfer to your pads? I wasnt aware of too many cars with SS these days.......



Extra steps?



Well you could have followed up with a SMR/finer polish of some sort ( I love Menz FP ) after the SSR2.5, but the SSR2.5 leaves a pretty swirl free base if you work at it from my experience. Thats the beauty of SSR2.5, it tackles some reasonably nasty swirls/marring but breaks down to a finer polish for a beautiful ready to wax finish.

The only other thing I could/would suggest is to use AIO as a base for your sealant ( if you have it ) - cant be beat IMO, its the best paint cleaner and/or sealant/wax base. I find that it aids or improves longevity as well, particularly sealants.



I think fundamentally what you did was good, but from the third pic there is still a little bit of marring in direct sunlight so you probably needed to keep at the polishing stage somewhat longer ( slower passes, more passes etc ) to get it "swirl free". But for a freebie job on a car thats not your own, your mates Dad should be mightily impressed.
 
Yep, I have most Poorboys, Clearkote and the Klasse twins too, I probably should have used the Klasse as it would be durable...



Well I did get a BBQ our of it :)



Not too sure its its single stage, no transfer, but it just seemed very thin of clear coat...
 
Well doesnt sound like SS then ( SS = no clear coat ) ;)



EX-P over AIO from my experience gets a solid 3 months on my gf's car that she does no favours. I try to wash it weekly, but often its 2 or 3 weeks between washes. But a QEW and its looking schmick again. It starts to drop off ( sheeting ) after about 2 - 3 months ( season dependant ) and slickness fades quite dramatically. Can go longer than 3 months in summer :D





But dont stress, you did a great job on the Escape! :xyxthumbs
 
It will be traded in the next month or so... but now I look at in pics it look horrid, but in person I couldn't see the marring.

I can, however, guarantee that it's not a single stage paint. Ford doesn't use single stage paint on any passenger car or light truck they build in North America. There are now two assembly plants building the Escape, and it's near twins the Mercury Mariner, and the Mazda Tribute: Kansas City Assembly Plant, in Kansas City, MO, and Ohio Assembly Plant, in Avon Lake, OH.



Ford hasn't used single stage paint on passenger cars or light trucks in over fifteen years.



Your color in Australia "Blaze Red" is called "Bright Red Clearcoat" over here.
 
We took these pics tonight, almost 24 hours later and after the car had done 450km today..... it seems too look deeper... or it could be just me...
