For some of us older guys: remember to work slower in the heat...

I am outside all day in Florida doing construction work. At the end of the day im too hot and tired to do much except maybe just wash the vehicle.

I typically go through 4 T-Shirts a day.

I cant wait for winter.

Man, it's been hot. And humid. And I'm probably not in the worst of it, either. It's been over 90* something like 26 times this year here in NEPA. We've set a record number of heat records. It was 96* today; it was 79* at 8AM.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for a good post. Some of these hot and humid days, I've actually been getting to my customers' locations by 5:30AM, just to beat the heat. At least that way, I'm done detailing at least one vehicle by lunchtime. It's just too hot to be working outside in the afternoon heat.

I absolutely hate this weather. I sweat like a prostitute in church. It doesn't take much to get me sweating. I don't detail full time, but I'm thankful that on the really bad days my father allows me to use his air conditioned garage for my customers. So-so days I try and get them to my house where I at least have a car port. By the end of each detail I am absolutely drained.

My hat goes off to the professionals who do this full time. I constantly think about detailing full time, but after a day of detailing where I'm so beat I can barely get home, I always ask myself " do I really want to do this" I could detail all day and night in the fall and winter, its just the summer heat I can not tolerate.

Thanks for the great advice mtwedt!

Hmmm, Lemonade, never really thought about it.

I should give it a try. I love Snapple right from the ole' fridge.

I know what you mean SK2003TypeS about those nasty stones. I had 'em earlier this year. I was asking my wife to shoot me to put me out of my misery!!!!!

But Scott, everyone knows you're superhuman... ;)

The air here is totally dead, it's been just this side of working underwater.

I'm just used to it. Regardless of the humidity, Phoenix is a lot hotter and basically, the strong possibility of 100+ degree days start in early to mid May and don't end until the first week of October. In comparison, Dallas really isn't that bad. Our last hot summer was 1999 when we hit 100 or higher around 50 times. Since then, most summers have had around 5-8 100 degree days, one year we had only 1. Mid to upper 90s feel really normal to me. I have a very high tolerance to the heat I guess.

I just drink a lot of fluids (water, caffeine free Diet Coke and Gatorade/Powerade). If I am working in the direct sun, every so often I will wander into the shade for a couple of minutes. When I skate in the early evening, it is still around 90-92 or so and I go through 2 quarts of water in about 75-90 minutes.

Oh yeah, I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the cold weather. Just absolutely despise it. I'd much rather work all day when it is 100 than 1 hour when it is 55 or less. I dread the approach of winter each yer. Personally, I would like the see the earth's axis adjusted so it never gets below around 70-75. Seriously.

"Lemonade is shown to not only prevent stones from forming but Lemonade can also dissolve already formed stones."

Never heard that before, I'll try that also. I usually drink several glasses of water diluted with cranberry juice which also seems to reduce the occurrences of kidney stones.

55 degrees is perfect working weather for me, maybe not detailing, but i love being out when i can see my breath and ya gotta jam to stay warm.

Here comes Santa Clause, here comes Santa Clause....and the cold hahahaha.

Don't forget the sunscreen guys, SPF 15+, and reapply every 2-3 hours (more often if your sweating). You can now get spray sunscreens, which make application very easy and quick.

You're welcome. As for passing kidney stones, this God's own hell on earth. Never had any, but I've had patients who did and giving a tons of morphine was like a drop in the ocean. General anesthitic would have been more to the point. In certain situations, I think lithotripsy can break up the stones, but I'm kind of out of my area of practice on this stuff. I just remember the old days when prople were admitted for this and just had to pass them on their own. Active labor looked like a walk in the park comapred to it. I am assuming that the recommendations for cranberry juice and lemonade to reduce the likelyhood of stones reforming is that it acidifies the urine produced by the kidneys, therby inhibiting stone formation. I don't know about the lemonade but the cranberry juice to acidify urine and reduce bladder infection infections turmed out to be soemthing not supported when the research was done and has been abandoned by most of us.

Facilitating the drift (hey, I started the topic),

I get chronic kidney stones. I used to pass one about every 6 months for a few years, but I haven't passed one for over a year now. I've probably passed close to 20 of them. Some of them have laid me absolutely low with pain, and some of them I didn't know I had until it was "time". I have a standing scrip for percs, so that I don't have to go to the emergency room every time I start feeling the ache in my lower back.

Trans am87, I'm just up the hill from you in Mountain Top. Maybe we can get together and share some info, some tips etc.

It should be said that before anyone takes anyone elses advice, especially from a medical standpoint, they should consult their doc.

With that said I will tell you all that when I had my stones, several bouts with them over the years, I was told to cut back on my calcium intake...my thought was, "I hardly take any calcium in as it is!" Yet I did what the docs said and cut back....BAM had more stones, and cut back more and BAM had more stones! :furious: So it went for some time.

I then talked with a nutrionist, not a doctor, but someone who knew alot about food and how our bodies work with that food. He told me that I had to triple my calcium intake as my kidneys need it to function so when it was not present they would withdraw it from my bones but this form of calcium would solidify and form stones. So I followed his advice and I have had only one stone since that time. I now intake lots of lemonade also, as I already stated AND I am also told by one of my Urologists that I should not sleep in one position or sit in one position for long extended periods of time but try to change positions every so often.

There a fair amount of oxalic acid in broccoli as well. If you eat that a fair amount, and it is a very nutritious food, you might cut back on that as well and see if you get further improvement. I certainly agree with the post about seeing your doctor about medical issues, especially before making radical changes that may not be appropriate for you. Do not assume that they know everything because they don't...no one person does. A good doc will say what he or she doesn't know and a great one will help you find answers and therapies with other health care professionals for getting the answers you are seeking. I was kind of surprised by the amount fo health and medical questions flying around these boards when I joined. You guys raise good concerns and obviously wants some input on them. I am happy to pitch in my bit of expertise where I can with the caveat that I am a critical care RN with a 25 year practice in open heart surgery. I can supply some basic strategies for things such avoiding heatstroke and hopefully point people in some useful direction about their health issues and provide info that hopefully reduces the reluctance and/or fear in dealing with certain issues. I think that is a reasonable exchange of skill for all the wonderful information that the very talented detailers on this board share with the rest of us.

Same here. I am a roadway inspector -we get to supervise everything and yes it gets hot as balls. I don't know how the laborers do it alllll day long. I am thankful I have a company truck that I can slip into during the day if its too bad.
