Thank you all for the wealth of great information posted regarding size, color, cutting ability and how many of each to purchase regarding foam pads, but not much is posted about the actual design of pads. I’m confused as to which design would be best as a newbie to machine polishing using UNO and 5.5” pads on a GG6 with the appropriate size backing plate.
5.5” Lake Country Flat pads advertise they “ have a curved shape. The curved edge allows you to polish over curves and concave panels with less chance of cookie-cutting because there's no squared edge.” But their Velcro goes all the way to the edge.
Is the curved edge an advantage or does it make it difficult to polish up close to protrusions like mirrors, roof racks etc?? Is there a danger of damaging paint because the Velcro goes all the way to the edge??
5.5” Buff and Shine/Uber pads have a squared edge and their Velcro is recessed from the edge of the pad.
Does the squared edge make it easier to polish close to protrusions?? Is the recessed Velcro an advantage for a newbie or is it not that important??
5.5” 3D Foam pads “include a black barrier so less product is absorbed into the pad”
Is this black barrier truly an advantage??
Another point not often discussed is the difference between backing plates. Are all 5.5” backing plates the same?? Is one softer than the other and does this make a difference??
Your thoughts are appreciated!!!
