Foam Pad Conditioning Brush on PFW pads?

Nooooooooooooo... Don't use brushes on PFW pads! Just use a wool pad spur. PFW's wear out too fast as it is. Brushes drastically reduce their lifespan. Brush for foam, spur for wool.

I figured it would be that way. Brushes look a little rough for PFW.

Really. I've used both (metal spur & stiff nylon brush) and they both work ok. Before using a PFW (or any wool pad), I like spurring them with a brush to clean and catch the hairs before use. The brush captures them where the traditional spur blasts them all over the place. But, I think a wool pad spur cleans them better and deeper.

The absolute best tool is the System 2000 pad washer. Makes pad cleaning fun.

How does one know when a purple foamed wool pad should be replaced?

I tried the brush noted above on a PFW pad and thought it a bit too brutal. I just keep several handy and wash them instead.

grrrr.... Looks like I've got another purchase to make. Its funny how I always miss a single little item, and in order to justify paying shipping I end up placing another $60 order... I'm already thinking of filler items for my third order in 1 month!

Hehe David, I broke in my new Edge wool pads by "cleaning" them in my UPW. The Grit Guard inside the UPW seemed to grab all the loose wool from the pads. It's definitely one of the better detailing investments!

If you have an air compressor, I have found that a purge of compressed air works the best to clean out the pad. I always clean out my PFW wool pad out in the sink with degreaser and hot water every few panels. Just squeeze out any excess water and spin the rest off with the buffer. It is sort of a pain, but it makes the job a lot easier with the best results possible.

What would be considered a degreaser? Thanks!

In this context I'd say anything from Dawn to Woolite to an APC, but that's just IMO.

In my (limited) experience, you'll either notice that it's not cutting as well as it used to, or you'll clean it and think "gee, that looks pretty....uhm...*used* " They really do wear out pretty fast, and IME (again, somewhat limited), the little 3.5" ones wear out really fast when used on the PC (all that random orbital movement as opposed to the uniform spinning of a rotary, or so I suspect).
