Sorry - tried to search for an answer to this but couldn't find one.

Can I use SMR after claying but before I start the Zaino process? I ask because SMR contains some oils and I don't want to create a mess if I apply Zaino over top.

Thanks!

I asked Sal the same question a while ago and his response was to wash with Z-7 after 3M SMR to remove the oils/fillers left behind before applying ZSCP.

The z-7 wash would remove such fillers? I would think that the fillers left behind by SMR, or any other polish, would be a bit more durable than that! Then again, I'm new at this, so maybe not :)

Shouldn't be any problem. I recently used Meguiar's SMR 2.0 on my wife's black Honda, applied with my new PC 7336 (woo hoo, I love power tools!). Finished buffing it off with some MF's, then went straight to Z1 followed by Z5. Drank beer and watched football for a couple hours (still kinda cool even though my garage stays warm, probably 60F). Buffed that with more MF's, then hit it with Z6 using even more MF's. Looks great, no problems or complaints. I say have at it.

I agree with Intermezzo330I's post, wash after using SMR if you are going to use Zaino. The oils and fillers are just sitting on top of the clear, kind of like makeup, so they are removed during the washing process.

Personally after SMR I would wash first with Dawn then follow-up with a Z7 wash. No sense in rushing the pre-Zaino prep. It is the most important stage. The Dawn will neutralize the SMR and other oils in the micro-marring and the Z7 will remove any Dawn residue. In addition the Dawn washing may reveal some areas that you may need / want to re-do that can not be seen with the SMR fillers in place. JMO :D

There is more benefit to SMR's abrasive action and swirl "removal" than any type of residual filler. Washing it off is not a problem.

I think if there were a car care manufacturer that were to make a single use wax stripping soap, similar to Dawn but without the residue then everyone would buy it. Right now are alternatives, ABC, PPCL, Zymol are sorta iffy in some aspects (ABC being hard to come buy). If they made "Dawn Auto" we'd all buy it cause I think that after claying or SMR or PPCL we should all remove any filling residue or oil in general to prep for any polymer Z, K or BF. Come on manufacturers, hint hint hint!!!!!

I stand corrected. But the wife's car still <em class='bbc'>looked[/i] great and beaded water like nobody's business. Did I create a real issue by not washing after the SMR, or is it just that I would have gotten an even better result if I had? ( I will <em class='bbc'>not[/i] be taking any shortcuts with my Acura when it warms up).

If you are getting great results, then who are we to say you did the wrong thing? :) PPCL also has oils and fillers (to a lesser extent though) and DavidB uses that as a prep and goes directly to Zaino or BF with no wash in between and that works fine for him.

I don't think you created a big issue by not washing after SMR. It's recommended that you do wash, but it's not going to completely negate everything you did.

My Vette is a weekend-driver only, but I frequently polish with SMR using my PC and immediately apply Z-2/Z-5 to the same area. The only intermediate step I perform is to remove all of the SMR residue with Z-6 until the finish is squeaky clean. I forgo the Z-1 step because durability is not my primary concern (my car sits in the garage WAY more often than not), and I forgo the wash step because I'd be constantly washing the car if I had to wash every time I used SMR! Plus, it's a little chilly outside to be washing the car right now...since I don't have to drive it on cold, wet, salty, dirty roads, I figure I shouldn't have to wash it, either! Anyway, my procedure has yielded great results, so I'd say it's fine if durability isn't a major concern.

Great looking Vette. I can definitely tell that its a Zainoed car by the way the color looks.

I went ahead and looked at your Home Theater site. Damn, you have lots of DVDs. 200 or so is pretty impressive. Laters

i had some bad buffer swirls on my car left by a careless detailer that i had to get out. I used SMR on the hood as a test, then applied Z1 and Z2 without washing first. both seemed very "smeary" and hard to remove.

the following weekend (after consulting with some of the experts here) i restarted the project. Wash with dawn. SMR the whole car. Wash with dawn AGAIN. Z1 -> Z2 -> Z6. MUCH better!!! the zaino was a breeze to remove. i would reccomend washing before zainoing. YMMV.

Don, thanks about the Vette comments! I work pretty hard trying to keep my baby looking perfect. :D About the DVDs...I really started collecting them back in 1999 when there were tons of internet DVD retailers and cheap prices were simple to find (<$10 a DVD). Not so much anymore.

I've never had any smearing problems when applying and removing Z2/Z5 on my car after using SMR, but then again, I use a Porter-Cable polisher for SMR application and Zaino removal, and I make sure to let the Zaino cure for at least 24 hours. I've had smearing problems with Z-6, but when I switched from cotton towels to YoSteve's microfiber towels, the smearing stopped. Like you said, though, YMMV.

I agree on the DVD thing.....back when I started collecting there were tons of online coupons and deals. I picked my first 50 up for an average of about 8 bucks a movie. Since half of the retailers went out of business due to coupon misuse, there are not many available and now my average price is about 14-17 bucks a DVD.........

Debaser330, where the heck have you been man?! :)

Anyway, good to see you back. I remember your post from a while ago regarding the detailer who went psycho on your car with a buffing machine. Hehe, thanks for the input.

I have never used the foam cannon before can someone tell me if I put straight soap in the bottle or a diluted version. I could use PB Souper Slick n suds or Ultima Shampoo
