Flex 3401 DA with 5.5" pads

Well guess what I figured out today. So I took the backing plate off the flex and put a 5.5" uber pad on it and there was 1/2 an inch of overhang? So I got a tape measure and measured the backing plate and low and behold it was 5"!!! I didn't think they made a 5" plate unless it's just a brilliantly cut down backing plate. Anyways, it must be St. Patrick's day or someting, cause I'm in luck and the 5.5" pads fit beautifully. Thanks for all your help guys.

Luck of the Irish.

Just for others that may be interested, Flex Tools has just announced the 4 3/8 inch backing plate for the Flex XC 3401...

I believe the cost is around $30. Should be out by mid march..

I just bought a half dozen 6.5" pads before I saw that announcement.

Flex is coming out with a smaller backing plate for that polisher. I know detailersdomain has it setup for pre-order.

Any particular reason why you don't want to just use your 6.5" pads? If somebody has/prefers ~5" pads that's one thing, but the Flex works fine with larger ones. I find that the machine's housing limits it in tight spots more than the size of the pads (taking off the plastic hand rest on top helps a bit but things get hot very quickly).

I'm happy with my flex and 6.5" pads. I started with a PC and had a number of 5.5" pads that I let go because a smaller backing plate wasn't then available for the flex. It would have been good to have the option to use both. Now I have enough pads not to have to stop and clean them somewhere in the process.
