flat pads vs. bi level pads

does any one prefer flat pads? I saw a pole on autopia that almost all perfer bi pads. I was going to try a flat pad because I have a hard time getting close to edges and thought the flat pad would be more like the old wool pads that I'm use to. anyone have feed back on this?

I have more questions than answers, I only use a PC and pads once a month, so those with much more practical experience than me could give you better answers.



Now for the questions:

What size pad / backing plate?

Is it the backing plate that you have problems getting close to edges with?

“Finger Pads� (CMA) provide a similar ‘feel’ to wool pads

I use a 7.5� pad / 6� backing plate and counterweight (it gives me a safety margin)







Experience unshared; is knowledge wasted…/

I agree with the safety margin TOGWT mentions. If you are having problems with getting close to the edges, with the 7.5 advanced pads you can angle the PC a bit to get the edge of the pad into smaller places.



I like the new advanced pads better, plus they seem better constructed.

sorry guys, I was refuring to a rotery.



and it is tha pad that I'm refuring to getting close to the edges and trim, not the backing pad.



It seems to me if the part of the pad that is doing the work is close to the edge, than there is some part of the pad "hanging out over the edge"

I've been using Meguiar's flat pads with my rotary and have got excellent results. I've also used contoured pads which also work well.



I guess the answer is, use whatever you like and gives you the results you want.

I take it you prefer to use the flat pad? I also had excellent results with the contour pads, I just have a rough time in tight spots and edges.



my concern was that I read must people were using contour so they must be better.........I need to stop reading so much. ha.
 
So far the flat pads are working for me. I've got more countoured pads coming and I'll use them in future details.



What I'm liking about the Meg's pad is that they don't act all squirrelly with a rotary like some other pads do. I can control the machine very well with them. If the new contours work as well I may switch to them, they're cheaper to boot.
 
I'm going to try the flat pads from megs.
