Flaky Clearcoat ?

New car - just had some repair work done (long story) so I have been inspecting the quality of the work in relation to the adjacent panels (original factory paint) and noticed that on one of the folded edges of the fender (the gap inbetween the hood and the fender when the hood is down - up near the drain at the bootom of the windscreen) there is a small area of slightly flaky/powdery clear. It is near those areas in the engine bay etc where there isn't any clear anyway - just the colour.

This is original paint - it has not been repainted. What is the best way to deal with this? Is it likely to spread? Should I hit it with a clearcoat pen just to seal it?

Will try for some photos tomorrow.

Thanks guys! I'm at work right now but will get some pics as soon as I get home. It might be a little bit of overspray - you can sort of flick it off with your fingernail. Yeah it looks very similar to those pics.

Nice Aussie car there by the way Slammin86! Over here it is a Holden (GM) Monaro

The black plastic is the "gutter" section below the windscreen and my hand is on the outside of the fender. You can see the clear comes down about half way over this bent lip on the panel (that is what is flaking) and there is definitely no clear at the bottom. Like I said the paint in theis section is original but the hood has just been resprayed. There is a little overspray on the black plastic near here so maybe thats what it is?

Any ideas what the best way to treat it is?

Thanks!

I would probably sand it down a little and then clearcoat just that area. I am afraid that it will start disappearing from the wind , etc.

Unfortunately I don't recall whether it was like this before the hood respray so it is difficult to know whether it is overspray :( I doubt it would be the original clear flaking. The other side of the car (other fender) doesn't have it, and the area is kinda rough like it didn't have a whole lot of clear in the first place.

Will try clay first and see how it comes up.

I don't really like the looks of that personally. I had a portion of my old Mustang resprayed and, to make a long story short, all the clear is flaking off my car and it looks very similar to what you have there. However, the flaking on your car looks color matched whereas the flake on my car was noticably clear.

I would just watch it closely for now. If it spreads then I would get pretty aggressive with some clear application... after careful research on methodology fo course.

I am going to try working on it this weekend. If it is just overspray over the original paint then it shouldn't matter if it peels... There is light overspray just around the corner below the mirror so I'd say some was channeled through a gap in the paper past this point during spraying.

I gave it a quick rub with 3M Perfect-It III last night which didn't do too much. I will try some clay and just aim to remove any flakes (I can flick them off with a fingernail ATM) then seeing it is on the edge only I'll probably just clearcoat pen it to seal... It on the folded edge at the top of the fender not out on an open panel like yours was...
