Flaking clear coat - How to remove? (Pics)

So I have a car where the clear is flaking off the mirrors.

What's the best way to remove?

I'd like to compound the base coat afterwards.

How long do you think your "shining" of the base coat will stay that way?

It will never really shine, the clearcoat is what creates the shine.

You are wasting time and effort to do so.

Here is the "fix" for the mirrors, since they are small.

Clean with a wax/grease remover, sand the clear off with 220 wet/dry and then resand with 400 or 600 wet/dry, makinf sure you DO NOT sand through the base coat, mask off and apply a rattle can of Duracolor clearcoat that any national autoparts store carries.

Or, have a body shop do the job.

Thanks Grumpy,

I understand that it won't last. I'm trying to sell the car so I'm looking to make it nicer than it is currently.

I'll use that method. I was concerned about sanding off the base coat as well.

Came out pretty decent.

The clear was pealing so I removed the clear with a razor blade. Wet sanded with 2k grit paper and polished it with power gloss.

Yes - without clear it won't last as long, but looks better than having clear pealing.
