Fixing an Open Clinic Mistake- HORROR!!

This thread is about a great looking black Nissan Skyline that had some swirls. Nothing out of the ordinary for a black car. An inexperienced detailer with a buffer caused some damage.

I visited him today to do a free inspection and perform a little test to fix his paint.

So I taped off the hood to do a test spot. I wanted two areas separated by a strip of 1inch painters tape. I used M80 with the RB, followed by the PC, and on the other test area I used M83 with the RB, followed by M80 with the RB, and then M80 with the PC.

The result is pretty astonishing. This was with maybe 10 minutes of buffing.

I determined that M80 with the RB was as aggressive as needed. When I return to do the real buffout in a month, I'll add passes of M82 with a W9006 polishing pad on the rotary to take the finish even further.

I finished it off with a coat of M21 Synthetic Sealant.

I'll be back in a month for the full detailed buffout. Stay tuned!

I don't know who at Meguiars did that work but I know I'd trust the two Mike P's. ;)

That sad thing is I have seen stuff come out of dealership detail shops that look 10 times worse.

It is amazing what correct product selection and technique can do, nice work. I'll be looking forward to your full detail on this car. :)

Hey Scottwax,

Nope its a new guy that's in a bit over his head. Its amazing though the liability that Meguiars could be held responsible for if one of their employees was reported for doing this to a customers car. Maybe they should require participants to sign releases, or maybe they should just make sure whoever they hire to teach a class actually knows what he's doing? LOL

Geeeeesh

Richard

dang, talk about butchering. glad you're there to fix the problem! couldn't have had a better person to take care of it.... :up

Nice work but is there really the need to put the guy on blast like the to the public? Not that being new is an excuse but I don't think that there is a need to embarrass him here. Maybe an email to his peers or something?

Hmm, you mean stay quiet so that us detailers will have more business? LOL

I'm not looking to get him in trouble by telling his peers, nor am I trying to embarass him. Frankly if he happens to read Autopia, then he's already ahead of the game to learning how to use a polisher, but I seriously doubt he is going to see this until someone at Meguiars figures it out. And when that happens, I would sure hope they offer an apology to the customer rather than sweeping the issue under a rug.

If this happened to one car two weeks ago, its probably happened on others. I don't think this is an isolated case.

Finally, what do you think the owner is telling all his team buddies about his messed up finish?? I'm sure he's saying that some guy at Meguiars is responsible.

I mean I know if I had to fork out money to fix something that someone else botched, I'd be mad as hell.

This Meguiar's rep is having it easy if you ask me. I fixed his mistake today for free but Meguiar's reputation is already tarnished by one trusted employee. Who do you think should really be embarrased?

He doesn't need to be embarrassed to learn to do things the right way. No doubt, it's the company's fault for cutting him loose without the proper training but what you post here isn't the way to get to the root of the problem. Now that I have had more time to think about it, you're actually doing more damage to the very company that you are loyal to.

re: Embarrassed

I don't think you understood my post. I was implying that Meguiar's should be much more embarrased than this employee.

re: Politics

Well, lets try to keep this thread on topic. If you'd like to discuss Meguiar's and their employees, please PM me or start a new thread. This thread is all about how I fixed a botched detail job from a trusted company during a public event.

Fixing "Meguiar's problem" isn't my concern, no matter how loyal I've been to them.

Another point of view....

Octane guy.. have you considered the fact that maybe the owner of the Skyline messed up the finish, then tried to blame the Meguiar's rep for doing it?

You stated that the owner of the Skyline posted his "dilemma" here...

So off to Meguiar's he goes and after the clinic this is what his paint looks like!!! He then posts here on Autopia seeking a second opinion. I find out that the owners name is the same as my brothers name--first and last name. I visited him today to do a free inspection and perform a little test to fix his paint.

Can you provide the link so we can read it? I did a search and could not find it.

By the way.. nice work.

I used the Meguiar's yellow W-8006 foam pad. I used 3 pads. One for use with M83, two for use with M80. One pad on rotary and one pad on PC.

Hey Richard - what pad did you use for those test spots? Was it the same for both the rotary and PC?

Have you thought about switching to Menzerna polishes? I am certain you will have a better experience with them.

Also, doesn't #80 have filler in it?

I bet #80 has light fillers in it but less fillers than #82. #80 is one of my favorite products!
