First two paying details: 2005 Celica and Lexus RX300

First, the Celica:

This was on a 2005 Toyota Celica, with metal flake light blue paint. I thought it might be really hard to get it to turn out nicely, because the flake in the paint is so incredibly dense that that's all you can see in the sunlight. Also, it made it very hard to see swirls in the paint and if I had done a good enough job correcting them or not. In the end however, I was very happy with how it turned out.

Since this was the first one I have ever done for money, I said I'd do it for $100. The interior was quite clean to start, so I just spent about an hour vacuuming it and giving it a quick detail, including cleaning the steering wheel leather and treating the surfaces and glass. The exterior took 6 hours (I'm new at this still, and slow).

The outside of the car got a wash and polish, and then all the trim, glass, chrome and wheels got their respective products. I used Zaino PC and Zaino Z5 x3 on the exterior.

The hardest part of this was taking pictures that made the car look as good as it did in real life. It was like trying to capture how good silver looks because of all the flake, and in person the car looked like it had three layers of paint on it - a light blue base, metal flake floating on that, and a super slick clearcoat on top of it all. The car looked very clean and very sharp. When she came to pick it up, I saw her truck pull into my driveway but no one came to the door for 2-3 minutes. I finally walked outside and she was just staring at the car because she couldn't believe how good it looked. That made me feel a lot better because I was scared I wouldn't be able to make it look good enough to justify the cost. No worries though - she called again today to tell me how great the car looked and that she didn't really want to sell it now because it looked brand new. *whew* Pictures!

Here's the car when I got it initially.

There were two spots that she wanted me to correct specifically. One was where someone had nicked her car with their door:

ParveenCelica002.jpg

The other was a dull spot on the driver side fender. It had been like this since she bought it used a year ago (on a one year-old car!!!). Turned out to be some nasty oxidation.

ParveenCelica006.jpg

I clayed the car and nothing was that bad except for the oxidized spot. The clay even corrected the door ding - it was just some paint left behind from the other car. The oxidized spot alone did this to the clay after three strokes across it:

Wheels before washing:

Finished wheels with DP Wheel Cleaner, DP Wheel Glaze, Mother's Chrome Polish and Z16 Perfect Tire Gloss. I want to try the Surf City tire dressing next as I hear it gives a similar matte shine to the tires.

The car hadn't been waxed....ever? By the way...any black spot you see in the after shots are all rock chips in the paint. There were tons of them - I don't know if it was Toyota paint or just really gravelly roads, but they were all over the front bumper and lower hood.

After washing there's already a nice improvement from the salt removal. It was washed with Zaino Z7 Car Wash.

The exterior got some polishing via Zaino PC and the Porter Cable and three coats of Z5 polish. I used Stoner's Invisible Glass, Stoner's More Shine in the wheelwells and engine compartment, Surf City Killer Chrome on the metal trim, and Mother's Back to Black on the black trim. Hopefully these pictures convey how amazing it looked, but I doubt it. I think I need a new camera!

While I was doing this, the neighbor stopped by and told me to tell him when I could do his Lexus SUV. I already have new customers! I did this job on my day off of work. I don't know how you pro guys do it - I was exhausted and went to bed and slept for like 10 hours. 7 hours in the Florida sun wiped me out.

As I was detailing the Celica last week, the neighbor's son came by and asked how much it would be to do his Lexus RX300 SUV. Since his dad is super awesome as a neighbor and is eternally helping us out and doing favors for us (without us even asking) I told him I would do the outside for $100, and the interior at a later date (for some additional money) since he didn't have the time to be without the car for me to do both, and the interior is pretty rough (it will probably take me almost as long to do the inside as it did the outside, which was 6 hours).

Anyways, I used this opportunity to try out the XMT 360 I ordered, and top it with some S100 wax, which was the first "nice" carnauba wax I have used. Prior to this it's all been Zaino synthetic stuff, so I was curious to see how it compared.

Here's the process I used:

Wheels:

DP Gel Wheel Cleaner

Agitate with random wheel brushes

Dry and apply DP Wheel Glaze, remove with Cobra MF

Dress Tires with Z16

Wheelwells got Stoner More Shine

Exterior:

Wash with Surf City Garage Pacific Blue Wash and Wax,

California Microfiber Sponge w/2 Bucket Method

Clay with Z18 Claybar (red) and Z7 Diluted as Lube

Wash again to remove clay residue

Dry with Ultimate Guzzler

Apply XMT 360 with PC Speed 6

XMT 3 then XMT 360 on hood (deep scratches and water spots)

Buff with Cobra MF Towel

S100 Paste Wax

Trim and Glass:

Mother's Back to Black

Surf City Garage Killer Chrome Perfect Polish

Stoner's Invisible Glass

I liked the XMT 360, and liked it even more once I realized that it went much faster and corrected much better with the PC on 6 and not 5. I couldn't get the swirls all the way out until I turned it up, and then it broke down nicely and corrected quickly. Unfortunately, I couldn't get 100% correction because some of the scratches and etchings were pretty deep. Even on the hood, when I used XMT 3 and an orange pad, and then went back over it with 360 on an orange pad, some swirling still remained. I didn't have time to do multiple passes with different products on the whole car, but it is probably 90% better than how it started.

The S100 went on very easily, and removed just as easily. I love how easy it was to apply. It made the blue a bit deeper than just the XMT 360 alone, and gave it a nice, mirror shine. Not quite as "wet" as what I am used to, but certainly acceptable. I'll see the car quite a bit since it almost lives next door, so I can judge how well this combo holds up. For $15, you can't beat the S100 (and I bet you could wax 100 cars with that one can).

Now for the pictures.

Just washing helped a lot, it had never been waxed:

Signature shot? If you can see the Vette reflected, it's a good job :)

That's it! I'll be going back to do the interior soon, hopefully. I'm hoping that he's happy, I had to leave the car for him to get since he is working nights right now. I'm always nervous enough about what people will think of the job I've done, but my house wasn't burned down or anything when I got home today so it should be ok :)

Nice job, my friend. How do you like the Back to Black? I really dont care too much for it. Its very watery and seems to fade pretty quickly. I've been using my local rep's bumper gel and it has great longevity and the look is awesome. Again, nice job!

yea that 50/50 of the hood is really nice!

Good work man, looks like your off to a great start!

Where exactly is Melbourne??

Jim

Nice choice of products both look great, the wheels and tires were cleaned and dressed beautifully too i might add.

You do really nice work, both look great.

Thanks, Scottwax, after seeing all the work you do on this board that means a lot!

Warlockid, I don't mind the Back to Black. It seems to give a nice, even shine to things without being overly glossy. It doesn't work well in the sun though, and you end up needing quite a bit. I'm still trying out new exterior products and when I find one I like more I will probably switch to it. I know that you can use the Perfect Tire Gloss on exterior trim but that's super watery and hard to work with.

Kleraudio, Melbourne is just south of Cocoa Beach on the east/central side of Florida.

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate them!

Great job Pauly!....:2thumbs: ......P.S. Are you still on active duty at Patrick AFB?.........Angelo.........:usa

Sure am. Got here about a year and a half ago, so 1.5 - 2.5 years left since they just changed the standard tour length to 4 years to reduce PCS costs. It's cool working a couple of hundred feet from the ocean :)
