Looks to me like you lost a retaining ring, or perhaps the shaft actually fractured. NCZ13--the backing plate is screwed in further down where the black hex is.

Wow, you have a problem with the thing inside, I have the problem with melting the plates. Has PC quality gone weird recently? O.o

To the OP- If the PC is new, return it. Otherwise it looks like its off to a repair center.

The BP is melting because the PC is getting to hot. This cab be from overuse at speed 5-6, large pads, or a cheap extesion cord(too long, too thin).

A PC should not get hot from running at 5 or 6 for long periods of time. Not having the washer installed between the backing plate and the machine can cause the PC to get very hot.

I purchased this pad from a fello autopian, stated new. There were no signs of use when I got it. I did the entire car and went to start my roof, spread the polish, sped it up to break in the polish, using little to no pressure and the pad and BP flew off.

Nope, I used it on my gold ES300 fine with no problems(complete correction), but on my friends e46 coupe, it melted it...2 plates in fact, the newest revision and the old revision. Eric at LC is quite perplexed how I did it on only 1/2 my friends trunk :hm

Everything was on so that shouldn't be a factor. I've thought of every possible reason out there and nothing seems to be legit :nixweiss

Eric even said that it could be the PC so I'm gonna email them after my finals are finished...

Running a 6.5" pad for 5-6 hours of hard use got mine so hot it was uncomfortable to hold. 5.5" pads are much easier on it. It was also 90F + during the compunding.

I do have the washer installed. Being that metal(the washer) conducts heat really well, and that the BP's threaded spindle is also metal to metal contact-there is a great path for heat to conduct to the BP from the motor anyhow. The motor is what is getting hot.

Improper power supply (i.e small gauge extension cords, too small of house wire, bad circuit from panel to outlet) will cause a power tool to overheat also.

If the PC is anything like my UDM then the internal clip is broken. Go to Lowe's or HD and find a replacement clip in their hardware section. I had this happent to me and I bought some C-clips for around $1. They may call it a retaining clip or something like that. If you take apart the housing where the spindle goes you might be able to find the broken clip. Just take it and find a replacement of the same size. Make sure you get an internal clip as opposed to an external clip. But if it is still under warranty you might as well send it in so you don't void (doubtful) your warranty.

I think the bearing and spindle are one assembly and yours has come apart. The part is available for ~ $35.00. Below are a couple of links; the first one is a parts list and the second one is a thread that shows how to replace the bearing/spindle assembly:

Porter Cable 7335 TYPE 1 Random Orbit Sander 5" Parts : eReplacementparts.com

HOW TO: Replace bearings - w/pics - DetailCity.org - Auto Detailing Forum

In the parts list it looks like it is #20 (SPINDLE AND BRNG ASSEMBLY PART NUMBER: 872991) and it costs ~$35.00
