First Scuff

TwoStroke

Hi everyone. Eight months ago when I first got my new Lexus IS, I applied Klasse AIO followed by KSG X3 and a coat of P21S. I havent done anything but wash since. I'm now getting ready to do some spring maintenance.

First, my paint is mostly flawless. Following the advice on this forum, I have completely avoided swirils. For this reason, I don't need an abrasive polish.

I do, however, have a 2" scuff on my hood. There is definately some minor paint damage that can be felt with my finger. I believe a piece of cardboard or something bounce off my hood at 80MPH. The cc has been compromised, but the paint on the scuff is intact.

How do you recommend I polish out this scuff? I would prefer to do it by hand, if possible, and would like to know if I can polish the spot or if I should do the entire hood. I'm also interested in knowing what product you recommend to deal with this.

After I take care of this I'm going to strip everything off, clay and then try out Zaino.

As always, thanks for the help.

IMO you should be able to effect a great improvement on the scuff, just be satisfied with "a lot better" and don't try to make it perfect.

Not knowing how hard your paint is or how bad the scuff is, I dunno just what to suggest. I'd use 3M PI-III RC (05933) followed by PI-III MG (05937) but those have been discontinued and are getting hard to find. Many autobody/paint supply places still have them on the shelves though, so I'd check the yellow pages. If you can get those, you should be able to fix it pretty well by hand without having to redo the whole hood.

I'm sure others will chime in with their favorite polishes as well so see which way you want to go. The above works well for me though, and the only problem I forsee is finding the products easily.

I'd recommend 1Z's Ultra/Extra followed by their Paint Polish, but those leave waxes and that doesn't sound like what you'd want.

Just remember that some flaws are forever and know when to say "good enough".

Thanks very much for your expert advice Accumlator, I really appreciate it. I'll keep a lookout for those products. I'm going to take a pic after the wash this weekend and post again. It's really not too bad, but bad enough to feel by touch.
