First Detail

I am going to be starting my first detail here shortly and I was wondering what products you would reccomend me using to get the paint WET!. This car has several swirl marks in the paint that the pics just don't show. I tried to get them but I just don't have the proper lighting. This is my moms car that I have been washing for about a year and a half (but mostly the automated car wash) and I think that is the cause for most of the swirls. I really need this paint to POP! I would love to have this car look better than it did when it left the showroom floor all around! Please help me with a list of stuff I should buy. I'm starting from scratch as all my old stuff is useless on this valuable of a car. My budget is going to be about $500. I would also like to purchase the Flex but I don't know which one. Please help me!

P.S. As this detail happens, I will be posting pics on this thread.

Thanks alot!

Kevin

Nice car. The Flex you are probably wanting is the forced rotation, dual action XC 3401 VRG. Flex also makes rotaries, or purely circular polishers, which will take more effort to learn and produce a hologram free finish. If you don't already have a PC or UDM, I would recommend the DA Flex. A few products that I would recommend...

P21S wheel gel

Menzerna polishes

Lake Country pads - I think these are on sale now at AG.

Take a pic of all the equip and supplies you have so that I can try to work with that you have when I offer my suggestions. I dont want to make u buy something if you have access to something similar. When I see the pic I will make my suggestions. Do you have a polisher?

I have barely anything. I don't do any complete details. If I do, I use the customer supplied OTC products. Let me go take a pic of the stuff I have. I don't have a polisher or anything. I will be starting from scratch but, yes I will do that for you!

MCWD,

I don't want to use any of the stuff I have now. All of it is pretty cheap and I am looking to step up my supples all around and get started on a small business. I think I am just going to nip it in the bud and spend the money. I think I can manage a $750 budget as long as the products are good so I would be able to make that money back in a few details!

ok well if I had to choose between the porter cable and the flex after knowing what I know now I would pick the flex... So it comes down to your pocket on that one. If your spending a lot of time I would wash, clay, then tape off car. You can order a lake country pad set from Autogeek for all your needs. I would start with mild pads and polish to see if you need to go more aggressive, but I think you would be fine with using Nano polish by Menzerna with the condition I am seeing. You can use the super intense polish and bump back up to the nano if your not getting the desired results, but I think that you will be happy with the nano polish. So far as a wax, I like collinite 476 because the water beading is insane. Autogeek will have all the products and microfibers needed for this car. That is my 2cents for the paint. Wheels, you should look at Wheel wax, its a good product. Black wow was just reviewed for all the plastics to bring up the color and I havent used it yet, but it looks great. For interiors I will let someone else tackle it. Im so crazy with interiors you will spent a few grand to have just the tools I use. I use my vapor steamer to clean the jambs and engine area down, so in your case a good all purpose should cover you since the engine is not that bad at all. You can use that all purpose for a variety of things from the wheel wells, engine, dillute to address carpet stains, etc. There is so much to cover, just ask me if you have specific questions, I am writing a novel here... haha

my number is on my website if you want to call for some more info:spot

Now its time for the specifics if you dont mind.

What wash and clay? I used the mothers clay kit before and it was a pretty good product but I think I can easily improve.

What set of pads would you suggest for the Flex?

What microfibers? (drying, polishing, interior, etc.)

Any specific APC?

-Wash- To many choices that will get the job done. Meg's Gold Class OTC or Chemical Guy's CW&G are popular choices.

-Clay- I like DP clay from AG or Clay Magic blue from Autozone as a medium clay

-For the Flex you can only use 6.5 pads. This is where a PC or UDM could come in handy--the option for a smaller backing plate and pad for tighter areas. At minimum, get some orange and white pads. A few of each.

-Microfiber- Nice plush ones for polish and wax removal and a couple waffle weaves for drying.

How would Meguiars Mirror Glaze #00 Hi-Tech Wash with a Natural sea sponge be for the washing??

For clay, I was thinking Meguiars Professional Clay with Pinnacle Clay Lube

Also, for the glass, I was looking at the Diamondite Glasswork System Kit (hand app)

Microfiber...I was looking at the Cobra Towel Combo at AG

Would that setup be any good?

To make it easy I will list everything that you can buy from autogeek.net. To wash the car I would use a product that I just started with called Optimum No Rinse. This is great for cleaning all aspects of the cars exterior and jambs. The wheels clean with ease as well. You can also use ONR as a clay lube as well. Wolfgang Elastic Poly Clay Bar was mentioned on autogeek and should be aggressive enough for the mustang, but more aggressive bars are available when needed. So far as the Flex you can get the FLEX XC3401 VRG Dual Action 6.5 inch Pad Kit offered on Autogeek and that will include all you need for pads annd the flex. Meguiars All Purpose Cleaner Plus D103 cleans almost anything! Clean carpet, vinyl, engines, tires, upholstery, leather, clear and colored plastics, and glass. Meguiars All Purpose Cleaner Plus D103 can be diluted to suit any job. Clean every surface with a single product! Microfiber products that I sugget would be the Miracle towel with its multi uses for polish and wax removal and plus buffing. Drying you can get a The Guzzler HD for great drying. ANy more ?'s

detail_king- A few things that haven't already been covered:

To get into the wheelwells you oughta jack the car up a bit. I'd even pull the wheels to do the initial big cleanup.

The scrapes on the front bumpercover will require pro repainting, but it won't be a huge job.

The wear on the leather looks scary- I'd either get a seatcover or have the driver take off the dutybelt/cuffcase when driving that car. Repairing leather can get costly.

The carpet/floormats would probably benefit more from extraction than from steaming IMO.

Pulling the wheels is a good way to get it all clean... Just lots of time. The steamer is on this site Steam Cleaner - Steam Cleaners - Vapor Cleaner - Commercial Steam Cleaners , you will be able to lift most stains with this and if you treat a stain with a good APC like the one I mentioned, you will have little problems. My website is under my profile. I would post it but I got in trouble the last time, so just look at my profile. With the bumper, I would get in touch with your local BMW, and Benz dealer and see what paint shops they use. The reason I say to ask them, is bc the expensive brands deal with the better paintshops in my area and that is who I use... More often then not, the ones that are cheap so crappy work.

DK,

Good advice all around. I had an identical scratched leather issue from an inside the pants holster years ago. The metal clip was exposed and damaged my seat.

Your picture shows at least one deeper cut, but hard to tell. Mine was repaired by sanding and redying the seat. Don't try this at home. Find a good leather guy.

Best of luck. I love the car! Let's see the beast when you're done.
