First Detail / Orbital Buffer Questions

I plan to do my first real detail on my truck, I have previously polished and waxed, but never done the real thing.

I have a Turtle Wax Orbital buffer with foam pads, Terry cloth Pads and compound pads.

My plan is as follows:

Dawn Wash

Clay Bar

Scratch X ( where needed )

Dawn Wash

#9

#7

#26

What do you think?

When should I use my orbital buffer and with which pads?

The buffer you have is sufficient for applying cleaner waxes and such but that's about it. I'm thinking the products you have are too mild to do a good job. Since the buffer doesn't have the speed or torque to polish paint adequately, you need a more aggressive product to compensate. The Scratch X might be a better choice than the #9 with that buffer.

I guess what I'd suggest is:

Wash

Clay

Scratch X with compounding pad

#9 with foam pad

Evaluate finish before using #7. Skip it if possible.

#26 with terry cloth pad

Skip the 2nd Dawn wash. Its a wasted step. Consider buying some Meguiars DACP if available. It would be a better choice than the Scratch X and #9.
