First detail for money -- Monte Carlo [800x600 pics]

One of my roomate's friends wanted me to detail his car for him since I seem to do a good job on my and my family's cars.

Since I don't own a shopvac, I told him I'd do an exterior detail only, but I still drove it over to the local carwash and used their 75-cent vacuum.

As far as the condition of the paint, it was very weird. He bought the car from a dealer auction, and used the money he saved to repaint most of the car. There was a god awful amount of orange peal on most of the side panels, and a horrible oxadized section on the trunk. It was so bad, I thought after first it was a piece of black plastic before realizing it was paint!

Due to the on and off rain showers, I only had enough time to work on the paint. I'm going back tomorrow to finish the wheels, tires, wheel wells and windows. So, only some teaser shots for now. :waxing: I'll update the thread tomorrow with pictures of the whole car.

Washed w/ Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo/Conditioner

Clay w/ Mothers California Gold

Rewashed due to rain

DACP #83 on Sonus Orange pad by PC on 3.

#80 Speed Glaze on Sonus Blue pad by PC on 5.

#16 by hand (all the local bodyshops say they can order it, but yet everybody here says it's discontinued??)

Voilla. This was my first time using the Sonus pads, and I absolutely love them. I had been using the Meguiars Soft Foam Buff before and these Sonus blow those away.

Swirls and water spots everywhere!

Horribly oxidized rear trunk panel.

After clay, #83 and #80.

I used my roomate's 2.1MP Samsung. :(

I'm sure a better camera would be helpful, but the results look good. Did you polish the tail lights also?

Looks great! :)

Could you please elaborate on the differences you found between the Sonus and Meguiars pads? Why do you like the Sonus so much better?

Looks good. How much time have you put into it so far? How hard was the polish to get out of the white checkered plastic on the trunk?

I keep looking at the half and half shot of the trunk, very nice. Did the clay do anything to remove the oxidation on the trunk?

The meguiars soft foam buff pads I purchased from a local autobody supply store didn't seem to be able to remove any type of paint defects. I have used them for the last 7 or 8 months on several different vehicles and they didn't seem to provide the type of result I was looking for. :nixweiss

A good example is that with Meguiars Speed Glaze (#80) and the Sonus Blue Pad, after 3 or 4 pass over a certain area, you can really see the product being worked into the paint. It starts to gloss over and the paint gets really "wet" looking. For some reason, I never noticed that using the Meguiars pad.

I also noticed that when using DACP with the Meguiars Soft Foam Buff pad, it would leave a little bit of marring compared to the Sonus Orange Pad that did not seem to do.

Also, I love the ease of use of the velcro backed flexiplate because I'm lazy.

I've put way more time into than I was originally planning, but that's mostly due to the weather. So far it's around 7 hours.

The clay didn't do a damn thing for the oxidation. It just made panel really smooth.

Eventhough the plastic looks checkered, it actually has a solid surface over it, so no wax got stuck in it. You can see in the picture that after I washed the car, there was some moisture trapped inside it.

In the future, try the #80 and green sonus pad, I think it's a light cutting pad similar to the green propel pad. It does wonders for Scottwax, that's like his go-to duo.

That is outstanding work - you seem to have gotten most of those swirls out of the door panel, how long did you spend and at what speed ( I just noticed you mentioned this sorry :) ) and pressure etc with the PC on each panel?

That really is a fantastic job :xyxthumbs
