Filling a mildly oxidized chip on a hood.

My mother's car has a fairly good sized chip on her hood that is down to the bare metal which has now mildly oxidized. What could I use to rid the chip of the oxidation before priming then painting? I've tried sand paper glued on a pencil eraser but for some reason it didn't work.

I've heard you can use primer such as rust-oleum or the like- the type that says it's for sound rusted metal. Spray some in the lid and use a brush or stick toothpick or whatever you normally use to put the touch -up on with.. on the sanded rusty metal spot.



Also be aware that most touch up paint is lacquer so read the can to see if the primer is compatible. It probably is- I think you can put lacquer over enamel but not the other way around..



you can always test the combo first- I like to practice on soda cans..

Try using something like Meguiar's ScratchX or GS27. Either one of those products should work. I've seen them take rust stains right off with little effort. A wee bit of oxidation shouldn't be any problem. If you have any Klasse handy then that would do the trick as well. Any paint cleaner should do it, really.

Thanks, I'll have to try the GS27 out because I have some laying around the garage somewhere.
