FI smearing on Zaino

Nikon

I applied Zaino to my Wife's new black Honda CRV last week. I used the ZFX and applied 2 coats of Z5 and 1 coat of Z2. (I must have put too much on because it was a pain to take off - but that is another story.):doh

Anyway, today I washed the CRV after work and after drying I used FI and a terry towel on a few areas. It is really weird because the FI doesn't seem to dry. When I looked at jsut the right angle I could see a kind of oily smear that wouldn't go away even when I changed to another towel.

I thought that maybe the FI isn't compatible with Zaino so I did a couple of searches. From what I found it appears that most people feel that this combination is compatible so it seems that's not the problem.:nixweiss

Does anyone have any ideas?

Call me thick, but I just did a search for "Zaino AND Final Inspection" and the threads that I glanced at all suggested using Z6 as the preferred quick detailer.

FI contains carnauba, which can smear, etc. when applied on top of Zaino. I've never had good luck with topping Zaino with a carnauba, and I've only used Z6 as my quick detailer...

I'd do a Z7 wash and then use Z6 as the QD from now on....

geekysteve,

I was under the impression that Final Inspection (Meg's #34, right?) was a body-shop safe QD (no wax, no "bad" silicone), and I didn't have a smearing problem the few times I tried it on top of Zaino. That said, I agree that Z6 is a much better QD for Zaino, and I'd recommend the same thing to fix the smears (a wash and Z6 QD).

Nikon,

If you want to be cheap about zaino QD, like how I was, you can cut it down by half with water. I noticed no decrease in effectiveness when I did it.

i second Tort with that FI doesn't have wax, silicone. but i have the same problem with smearing but when i use it over poorboys EX.

Would Eagle One Wipe 'n Shine work better? I got a bunch of Zaino stuff for Christmas, but did not get Z6, and I was thinking about applying it all this Saturday. I already have a bunch of other stuff, and If I buy any more, I think my wife will have an aneurism (sp). I know the EO isn't supposed to contain carnauba, so it shouldn't smear right?

How about Mothers Showtime? It has no wax either and (apparently?) not enough alcohol/distillates to have any health warnings on it... :nixweiss

IndigoGTI, I'd be pretty nervous about this. As I understand it, the Z6 does some sort of chemical miracle thing related to proper bonding or curing or something. That's why you're supposed to Z6 before and after layer of Z2/Z5. (Or at least that's the propaganda I've swallowed, and I'm stickin' to it.) I think I'd be inclined to contact my Zaino rep before monkeying around much with other QDs.

Oh! By the way, it's probably not worth losing your wife over this!

Thanks for all the great Feedback,:xyxthumbs

When I did the search for Zaino and FI the threads I read did say that the Z6 was the best with Zaino. From the comments I read, it didn't sound to me that folks thought FI was incompatible. I did read the comments about how Zaino is incompatible with QD that has wax and since FI is supposedly wax free I assumed this meant it was OK.

I did have some Z6 but I used it up a while back. I must admit I quite liked it and was using it on both our cars even the one with out Zaino on it. I must admit to being far too enthusiastic in my use of the Z6 and ran out much sooner than I should have.

Thanks for the tip on cutting the Z6 with water. I'll give the Zaino folks a call, order some more Z6, and ask them about this as well. I've also ordered some Autopia MFs and CBTs in case it is my towels.

:)

Nikon, you're going to love the Autopia CBTs. They have made my Zaino removal and QD'ing ever so much more carefree! :up

Yeah, I'm going to order some Z6 when I get a chance, and toss some ZFX in the order too. My wife likes to complain about me spending so much money and time on the cars, but she does like it when her coworkers tell her that she always has the cleanest looking car in the parking lot. I just need to find her a hobby......

IndigoGTI:

It really sounds more like you might be using too much of whatever QD you are working with. It only takes a light mist.
