It finally happened. At 45 I need glasses. I ordered a pair this weekend. It was way more money, than I thought they would be. 😕

$265 for frame and lens. Then I got the upsell pitch for anti scratch film. Me "Sounds good!" Them "Ok that will be an additional $280!" Me " excuse me did you say $280 additional" them "Yes". Me "nevermind."

So I have a question. Has anyone used a glass coating on their glasses?

I did buy the insurance for $30.
 
Lol I`ve been wearing glasses since I was in grade 6 ugh. Yup Costco is a great places to sort glasses.

Never used a glass coating on them but my glasses are going on 7 years old now and I need new ones myself. The ones I have right now I paid $750 for all in so I`m getting my money`s worth haha.

I am lucky, I can wear contacts for 14-16 hrs a day w/o any issues. Try a pair of Acuvue Oasys contacts. Very comfortable, I honestly don`t even know I have them in my eyes. I put my contacts in first thing in the morning and don`t take them out until bedtime.

I went to Walmart for my glasses. $60-75 out the door lens and frames. They aren`t stylish, coated or fancy, but I can see. BTW I wear the glasses about once or twice a month. I have never left my house with glasses on in 20 years that I`ve had my glasses:)
 
If you belong to Bjs or Costco you will do way better on prie, but will be lomited to fewer choices. If you can make those work, you will save some $.

Also, in the optometry shops, DO NOT BE AFRAID TO NEGIOTIATE.

The mark uponthe frames is obscene-
 
Thanks everybody for the replies. I am truly a noob. They kept asking questions. Like how does this feel? Do want pads or pad less frames? And I was looking at them like they were from another planet. I simply would say "how do I know! I have never had to wear glasses."

Costco is out for me. To long of a Drive. Bj`s was right down the street and I didn`t think about trying there. I will definitely look give them a shot.

The Dr didn`t seem to think I would be a candidate for Contacts. I think my prescription is for +1. I assume that is pretty mild. Like I said I am a complete noob to this world of vision problems.
 
Long time eyeglasses wearing here too. Regarding coatings, definatly get an anti-glare coating. It`s well worth the money. I`d also recomend looking at frameless glass as an option - light weight and basically invisible. I`ve been wearing the same pair by this company for the last 8 years:

They are the best I`ve found to remove smuges/ dust/ cooking grease.

My wife wears glasses, and we to thought the prices were crazy. I`m a listener of Clark Howard and he has some great alternatives:

We gave Zenni a try for some beater sunglasses, they were great, so we`ve been buying from them ever since. My dad has been a lenscrafters guy for ages and he got a pair recently as well. The hard part is measurement, I use some digital calipers to measure things, seems to work quite well so far.
 
Been wearing glasses since the second grade. I`m with Angus, Silhouettes are my favorite "frames" I`ve had. Even though I`ve got pretty thick lenses, they still don`t weigh anything so they don`t move around. Literally just wire ear pieces and a wire bridge for the nose pads.

I`ve always gotten the anti reflective coating, not sure about anti scratch. I guess I`m desensitized from buying glasses throughout the years, but I just never plan on them being cheap. I pay extra for whatever the fancy lenses are so they end up thinner (otherwise I`m sure they`d coke bottles :wacko:

It`s probably sacrilege, but for cleaning them this round of lenses I`ve been using quick detailer and a Griot`s speed shine towel. So far it hasn`t had an ill effect on the coating, and I`ve had much fewer marks to the lenses from cleaning. If a deep pile Microfiber is good for our paint, how couldn`t it be for glasses?
 
That is cheap. Been wearing glasses since 9th grade(close to 40 years). The pair I am wearing cost well over $800 2 years ago which is sad because my work safety glasses in the same prescription with bifocals for less than $100 and the only difference is the safety glasses don`t have tinting(Transitions). Bifocals, that was a kick in the shorts getting them, had them now for about 8 years and talk about feeling old when at your age the doctor telling you that you need bifocals.

Add the tough coating when you order them, don`t try adding a coating like you would for your car windshield. I don`t think that would work and just cause a glare. If you have some old worn out 100% cotton T-shirts they work quite nicely for cleaning glasses. I bought some MagicFiber cleaning cloths and they work decently. I really haven`t found anything else that great. If you decide to use one of your microfiber towels just make sure to give the lenses a blow as you don`t want those tiny fibers ending up in your eyes. If you use a glass cleaner if any kind make sure it is ammonia free.
 
I`ve needed glasses since the third grade, I`m now 51. In 2007 I had LASIK done (for 5 Gs !!) and I was good to go for about 3 years. Then, thanks to aging, my eyesight got just a little worse and I needed glasses again. I went with the coating because I`m rough on things, and it held up well. THEN, I developed a cataract in my right eye (watch the cataract surgery on UTube some time, it`s really cool) so I had cataract surgery almost exactly a year ago. I have NEVER had such a vision improvement in my life!!! Not only are distant things clear (I`m nearsighted), but THE COLORS!!! Everything had a blue-white tint to it, the Dr said it`s because for years I had been looking through a "dirty window" and now my vision is the same clarity as when I was a newborn.

There is ONE drawback to the cataract surgery ... I can now SEE my LASIK scars, it appears as a ring of light around every light source, It took a while to get used to, but now I kind of wish I hadn`t had LASIK. The only other thing is that I now would need reading glasses IF I get my left eye done (a light cataract there too), but for the moment, it`s not bad enough for ME to want surgery and with my left eye, I can read fine, it`s just distance that`s a little blurry.

The last "drawback" is at the pistol range, I can see the target perfectly with my right eye, but I cant really see my sights, so UNDER 50` I`m good, about 35` - 40` + I can see the gun well enough to hit the target, but now with the accuracy I used to have (The replacement cataract lens doesn`t "adjust for distance" like your natural lens does, so my vision is awesome from about 5` and farther, but closer than that and it gets fuzzy.)
 
Don- Similar experience here, decades with glasses pre-LASIK and then an Enhancement, cataract work (multiple), and finally a PRK in one eye, but ALSO....I had major Retinal Tears, a Fully Detached Retina (when far from surgical facilities, think "tissue death") and damage to that Macula, so my New Normal just isn`t all that great :( (Do pretty OK with the shooting, my Master Eye is "up close" and my other is "distance".) Sigh..but anyhoo,

Glasses stuff ya don`t always think of that I find critical:

-Length of temple pieces (I need really long ones)
-Need for/not separate and adjustable nose pads (I need them)
-Size of lenses for functional purposes vs. appearance (think "light leakage" under some conditions)
-Lens composition (need `em to be "safety glasses" or not?..think "range work"/etc.)
-Durability if they`re your only/primary pair (at the worst moment...)
-Polarized/not ("not" for me, can`t see displays in the vehicles)
-Photosensitive/not, and if so does it work behind UV-blocking glass (think "inside the car", not all do)

I got an Oakley set of frames with the upgraded lenses for 150 OOP thru my insurance and most of that was the upgraded lenses. the premium frames were half off thru my insurance. so they were only 50 extra

our insurance lets us pick one of the three , scratch resistance, bifocals or trifocals or the color changing lenses .. I went with scratch resistance (for free) and upgraded to the thinner lense but not the thinnest ones as they were like an additional 200+ IIRC and I didn`t have that kind of cash to spend at the time
 
512Detail- Are the Oakleys your sunglasses or "regular" ones? I`ve never had their stuff but it seems like everybody I`ve ever trained with had `em.

My last "good/regular" glasses were Matsudas, loved `em but it was hard to find places that could make the lenses to fit them.

I always had a pair of "beater-glasses" too, and they did always get beat up! Oh man, I really oughta start thinking about getting new ones to help a little with this New Normal...

Oh, and Lucky You that the insurance helped! Mine`s useless in this regard.

I have ordered my Glasses with no coatings. Right now we are living on one income. (wife doesn`t work. At least I know who is raising my son) I`ve opted to save the money. Hope it doesn`t bite me in the end. On a positive note. My eyes are perfectly healthy. Just the lenses are having a hard time focusing when I look from something close to far and back. Which I do everyday all at work. I won`t need to wear them driving. Told my wife I would buy a nice case to protect them when they aren`t on my face.

You can do it without the coating. If you are buying a case pick one up that opens and closes and not the ones they usually give you that they slide into. Don`t use paper towels or those paper type tissues in eyeglass wash stations as they are a little stiff. Besides the MagicFiber cloths I recently picked up before that I picked up some cloth camera lens cleaning cloths and they work quite nice. Last but not least if you are in a dusty environment run glasses under water to rinse any dirt and dust off before doing any wiping. Anything that prolongs putting scratches into the lens. Plastic lenses will scratch quite easily without the hard coating.

That focus thing I used to have the same problem every time I got a new prescription and it takes about a week and your eyes should adjust.

I see cataract/surgery mentioned. Been through it with right eye 2 years ago and it stemmed from a torn retina the year before. I wanted the doctor to do both eye when I had the cataract surgery because when they change the lens they can actually correct your vision (not sure if completely or not)when the new ones are put in your eye. He would only do the right eye as that needed it. After 2 years now I don`t notice it much anymore but it was hard to get used to how brilliant white is out of the right eye and the yellowish while from the left eye.
 
At age 45, I`m wondering if its reading glasses that you need. If so, you can just pick some up over the counter No Rx needed. BTW, that`s what my ophthalmologist suggested that I do.

The Opthamologist told me readers would be fine at home. However, he suggested progressive for work because I am always focusing on things at different distances. I work in healthcare and am constantly looking from a computer monitor at a 18 inches, one about 3ft away and then looking up at my patients who are about 15 feet away. He said now would be a good time to get used to progressive lenses. I`m not a candidate for Lasix and over time my eyes will get worse.

I`m just hoping it helps with the eye fatigue and headaches. I have been getting over the past few weeks.
