Extreme Wheel Cleaning

Here we have a Mercedes Benz ML 550, I usually wash this truck once or week but that slipped and its going on a month without a single wash, which looks like this:

Good job Nick! If you're driving around town, just notice now many vehicles you see with "normal" looking rear wheels and black or brown fronts!

I don't know how they can stand it! The fact is that most of them don't notice or don't care!

Oh I know,

whenever I see that I feel like jumping out of my truck and cleaning them.

Before I really got educated on detailing/cleaning, I had always thought BMW's and MB's came with darker wheels on the front. :D CURSE those dusty brake pads!!

Great job Nick. I know how you feel about the front wheels. I have a BMW and the break dust drives me insane. That is the one thing that I ABSOLUTELY can't stand. I always point out to my wife whenever I see a MB or bimmer with black wheels. She says "your's doesn't look like that". I am fanaticle about cleaning my wheels.

There's a 2007 Benz I see everyday in the parking garage at work. The owner parks near the door. So, i see it ever time I come to work. I swear the front wheels have been brownish/black seen since the first day she bought it (bought brand new). I have a tuff time looking at it but I'm drawn to it everyday. :scared:

Thanks for the kind words guys, Just seen the truck today, swiped my finger on the wheel and there is already a decent coating of brake dust.

There are remedies for dust: ceramic brake pads (not made for all cars, especially older ones) and certain brands - I am switching to Wagner brake pads soon. Other guys in the club have switched over and they are a very low dust pad. Porterfield is another low-dust brand, but I have no experience with them.

Again, NICE work on the ML. ;)

I fight major brake dust on both of my Volvos too. I got fed up with it on the R and went with Red Stuff Brakes, but I would never do it again. The dust level is WAY down, but I sound like a city bus stopping half the time and it drives me nuts. The problem you get with these cars is that the brakes are dusty, but there aren't many options, if any, out there that offer better brakes than the OEM. All 8 corners of my two Volvos have OEM Brembo Brakes and their performance is unmatched, but that just means I have to clean them every day.

I do have an entire stack of MF's dedicated to just rims. I simply use my Griot's Speed Shine and wipe them off either daily or every other day. It keeps from getting the dust caked on that way.

yeah my mechanic for my bimmer says the ceramic brakes offer less dusting but they also can burn rotors.... pads are cheaper than rotors..

I use EBC Green Stuff brake pads on my '98 Explorer. The vehicle has chrome rims and I have not seen any brake dust since I installed the new pads two months ago.

I am not sure if they are ceramic or not but they have not damaged the rotors in the 3 years I have been using them. EBC also makes a rotor that is designed to work with the brake pads.

My mother has a 2008 E350, I cleaned the wheels once for here when I washed the vehicle and they were dirty again in like three days.

Was thinking about applying that new Eagle One brake dust repellant to the wheels. Wonder if it works.

Looks great Nick!

I never could understand why you see BMW, Benz, and some other luxury cars using break pads that dust like crazy. My TSX and my girls RL will go weeks without seeing any major dust build up....and I drive my car pretty hard. :D
