Extreme Make over on a Mazda 3

Gen2

This Mazda 3 is the toughest car that I have detailed in all my recent projects. As you guys can see, it is not the usual pearl black Mazda 3, the owner got the car re-spray to a solid black color. When the car just finished the re-spray I happened to see it at the workshop and I did notice there was a fair bit of orange peel on the paint work. But when the car turned up for the detailing session a few weeks later, most of the orange peel was gone. BUT guess what went into the paint work…HORRIBLE SWIRLS & SCRATCHES were found everywhere on the car.

More of the ‘beautiful’ swirls will show in the before and after photos. The only reason I can think of how these defects were put into the car is most likely while the painter was trying to ‘iron out’ the orange peel from the paint work, at the same time he was putting in all these nasty swirls and scratches.

So after washing and claying the car, without thinking further, I took out my rotary, yellow cutting pad and the Power Gloss combo. With this I managed to remove those deeper swirls and scratches. Than I followed with IP/RMG + green polishing pad + rotary and finally 106FF/RMG + white polishing pad + DA.

Here are the before and after photos,

On the door you can see an obvious improvement on the depth and clarity of the paint work after the defect removal on the right hand side.

With the halogen lighted up, this is what you see,

On the side view, you can also see an obvious difference between the treated and the untreated section.

After the defect removal process, I follow up with the Pink Moose (VM 50 / RMG 50) using the DA with a finishing pad. This step further enhances the depth and wet look of the car. As for the finishing touch, it has to be the Clearkote Carnauba Wax and JW Carnauba Jett combo, one of the best combos to use on dark color cars.

Can’t help it but got to do this shot,

Btw the photos were taken 6 plus in the evening after a whole day rain and as shown in the photos, the road was still pretty wet. Not the best lighting to capture the true beauty of this car but the photos still turned out pretty alright.

WOW!!! Looks Great. Im really thinking about getting a Mazda 3 soon, especially after these photos and the red Mazda 3 you did a while back.

Also, Singapore looks beautiful. Is it really illegal to spit in public???

Hey guys thanks for the compliments ;).

freestyla - Singapore is known as a garden city, beautiful and neat. Spitting and littering in the public is an offence.

 What a turnaround!

BTW, I have to agree about the CMW/CJ combo (although I use a 50/50 mix of CJ/OCW for easier use) on black. :up

Thanks for all the kind words guys :) .

Although all the swirls and scratches were pretty nasty but when the car is fully done up, I kind of appreciate the painter's effort in removing the orange peel from the paint work.

Scott - Actually I started using CMW after seeing all the great result you are getting from dark color cars in your previous detailing works. Adding CJ to the finishing touch really adds on that extra shine and depth to the paint work.

Did the owner have the car repainted 2/2 a car accident or did he just want some better quality paint? Also, did the body shop wetsand the car in order to remove the OP or did the owner do it himself?

The car looks amazing. I really like the paint. It looks freshly dipped!!

Once again, thank you guys for all the kind compliments.

J.J. - The owner just wanted this solid black color instead of the original pearl black, not because of accident or anything else. Not too sure what the painter did to remove the orange peel but definately a big improvement as compared to the day I saw it when it just came out from the oven.
