Extending the power chord on a GG 6 ft. Machine.

Extending the power chord on a GG 10ft. Machine.

Is this an option that is worth looking into? If yes, what guage wire would be appropriate for a 25 foot extension? Thanks in advance.

cheaper/easier, unless the cord needs replacing in the first place (just my opinion)
 
RonK is spot on and I vote for this as well..

You would want an extension cord not chord, that is the same Awg wire as what comes out of the machine..
I dont have that machine but have to assume it will be 14Awg if its Griot's machine..

So, go to Home Depot or Lowes's, etc., and find a good round extension cord in 14 Awg (gauge), and you will be fine..

I use that size cord all the time with my Rotary or occasionally, the Flex 3401VRG, and Meguiars G110V..

I have the hd gg6 with 25 ft cord and I still find that I need an extension cord most of the time. on the standard gg6 they use 10' (18 AWG) and on the hd gg6 with the Extra-Long 25' cord (16 AWG). I would just buy a good 14 AWG extension cord. (and I'm just an aspiring hack)
 
I will advise against a longer cord

I had a 50 foot cord installed on my Flex 3401

It is a pain in the rump to coil it up without twisting

I prefer a cord that is long enough that the plug reaches the ground when you are polishing the roof of an SUV

With the shorter cord you can wrap it around the machine, for quick easy storage

I use a 100' extension cord on a $10 wind up reel from Home Depot with a 3-way splitter to power my Flex, PC and light using one cord

I can wind up 100' in 30 seconds


If you are only polishing in your own garage, consider one of the wall mounted self retracting cord reels. I have the yellow one from HD

Griots informed me that if I changed the power cord it would void the Lifetime Warranty so I just found a 12' two way extension at HD and permanently taped it to the 10' standard cord.
 
You can find this wide velcro made by 3M I think, at Home Depot and it works great holding an extension socket and plug together... And they dont come loose..

I still like using a 25 foot 14 Awg extension cord that is strong, round, and smooth, plugged into the end of the machine's male plug..

Its plenty long if say you are getting power from the center of the garage, to go any direction and not be a problem..

Well not "permanent" as I could take it off if I wanted, but since it is a 2 way plug it's not a large bulge in the cord so I just leave it connected at all times for a total of 22' which has been plenty for my work area.
 
There's a chart somewhere (hey, this is the Age of the Internet...) about what the amp-to-extension cord gauge rules are but I just err on the side of caution when in doubt. I too just use 14GA cords with my polishers, but one of these days I'm gonna splice-and-solder on some other pieces of equipment.

Having been there to build huge multi-level campus environment buildings from the ground up in another life, I totally learned how important it is to Overbuild as much as possible, and with regard to electrical needs current and anticipated, you really dont want to have to do this all over again - ever -

A heavier gauge (Awg) extension cord will always be better than a lighter gauge extension cord to allow the thing at the end to operate at its best level and have no resistance (heat) build up in the wire connection...

Yes, you dont have to do this, and nothing may ever happen because of it, but Im not one to want to change what has proven to be the best practice for my needs.. :)

Gentlemen,

Sorry for bringing up an older thread/conversation, I'm getting ready to purchase some extension cords and wanted a solid setup to have: A Flex, LED work lamp and halogen lamp for the most part ( on and off the PC will get plugged as well ) :

-Can a 14 gauge short cord with a 3 way splitter on the end, hooked to the 14 gauge long cord work well and safely ?
-Would a splitter (boxy Type) work as well/safely? instead of the short cord splitter type.
-Ron : what gauge is your 100 FT cord ?

I'm pretty sure I've worked the PC before off a 16 gauge along with a halogen dual lamp set up, but that was a few years ago and i want to get a new more solid set up now that i can afford it and will have "better" equipment.

the 14 AWG setup, either one, will work fine. I'm assuming your Halogens aren't like 2000 watts.

You assume correctly, it's a cheap $10 HDX Brand single 200W Halogen lamp, for doing check ups after the main LED Light. If it craps out on me i'll just get a better halogen set up.

Could you explain better how you plan on distributing power? From receptacle to splitter etc?
What's the length you want for the short and long 14awg cords too?
Either a receptacle type box splitter or a 3 way splitter will work. If it happens to show it's rating, your looking for a minimum of 15a.

I was using cheap 16awg cords last year but no more than 30'.
I bought the Rigid cords from depot. I got tired of cords that are like crappy garden hoses. These are very flexible even in the cold temps.
A 50' 14AWG for my blaster sidekick on the driveway AND a 25' 14awg for polishing in the garage with my Flex or Rupes'.

If you plan on running a 100' cord I would personally step up to a 12awg if your going to plug in more than one thing at the end.

Don't plan on doing a 100 ft anytime soon. Ended up getting a 50 ft 14 gauge 15amp at home depot with a 14 gauge 15amp 4 way splitter box (8 ft cord) with circuit breaker . Tried it today and so far so good,thank you all for the replies and suggestions.
