Exhaust Tips Infiniti

...on another forum. He was asking about clay bars. But someone else posted in the topic before I could, and started saying that Clay Bars will strip wax. Now I'm pretty damn sure that isn't the case....so I said so, I gave the newbie a few suggestions of my own.

But now my question is...how can I tell this guy that clay doesn't remove wax.. (other than just saying it...I need some facts to back me up)

I know more about detailing than the average person (thanks to you guys), but I'm still learning myself.

Yes you are correct. Most clay bars will remove wax.

But he might have meant that clay bars will not affect durable synthetic sealants, which is also true.

If I were you, I would first experiment on your car. Wax the whole hood, clay half of the hood, and spray water on your hood. Then tell him (or post a few pics) about how the clayed side didn't bead.

That should be a good indicator that clay bars will weaken wax.

<strong class='bbc'>BW, I think martini is the one who is saying that clay doesn't strip wax.

Yes, claybars do strip wax. [/b]</blockquote>
yes, I was saying that they don't...

Wow, learn something new everyday. You guys are the best! :)

I think I need to learn how to read each post more carefully rather than just skip through threads! :D

These are definitly not Stainless Steel and certianly not chrome. i would guess Aluminum but I am not sure.
Can someone tell me the best way to get these polished up a bit? They look dull.
Last wash, I removed all the Tar and exhaust stains but they look clean but dull.

Here is a picture (sorry about the quality it from my phone). They are clean, just a few miles in the rain last night on them is all.

Any suggestions? Would love to really brighten them up.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,
You can go a couple of ways with this. Since they are already clean, you don't have to do to much to bring back the shine.
1. Try P21S Polishing Soap. This is really a good product for this. I even use it to polish Silver in my house.
2. A good metal polish like Optimum Metal Polish.
The hard part (cleaning them) is already done, so just polish them up.

I actually think I have that and thought it was a more mild product than what I needed. I will give it a whirl.

Thanks Barry.

I own a 2004 FX35 and have the same tips. Take a mf and put some Autosol or metal polish on them and buff them like you do a shoe shine. Follow that up with the same method with some Collinite metal wax or a similar product and they will look great.

Is Autosol over the counter or does it need to be ordered? I have the Coli Metal wax. its the brownish one in the same looking bottle as the IW845 right?

Do you get a real bright shine from them?

Autosol is an OTC product, but it's a good one. Yes, that's the metal wax. It will mildly improve the look but it's more for locking in the finish you get polishing the chrome or metal. I have it on my 20" Infiniti chrome wheels and it looks great.
